Cell-mediated immunity in patients with mycosis fungoides in clinical remission: effect of thymic humoral factor on the immunocompetence of the lymphocytes.

In 10 patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) who were in clinical remission following local treatment with nitrogen mustard, cell-mediated immunity was investigated by means of tests for lymphocytes, forming rosettes in the peripheral blood, and the graft-vs-host reaction as well as intradermal skin tests. The effect of thymic humoral factor (THF) on T lymphocytes with impaired immunecompetence was also investigated. The results provided evidence of various kinds of damage to the immunologic system in most of the patients. Of the 10 patients, 4 had low percentages of T cells. Eight of the 10 had a graft-vs.-host reaction which was weak or negative, and in 4 of these, the administration of THF to the lymphocytes induced an improvement in immunoreactivity. These results together with other recently reported data indicate that the determination of cell-mediated immunity in patients with MF may be of prognostic importance. Those patients whose T lymphocytes respond to treatment with THF are probably the best candidates for immunotherapy.

Circulating anticoagulant and serological tests for syphilis.

Circulating anticoagulant (CA) and particularly lupus anticoagulant are commonly associated with biological false-positive tests for syphilis (BFP-STS) in patients with collagen diseases. CA was presently found in the sera of 8 out of 30 subjects with chronic BFP-STS without collagen or autoimmune diseases. It was not found in any of the 21 patients with various stages of syphilis. In 5 out of 21 elderly subjects (age greater than 70 years) in whom a positive BFP-STS was detected, there was no CA. It is concluded that the association between CA and BFP-STS is found only in patients with collagen and autoimmune diseases and in some of the younger chronic BFP-STS reactors. It is not detected in syphilitic patients or elderly subjects in whom a high incidence of BFP-STS can be found. The difference in the incidence of this association is probably due to the differing biologic behaviour of these autoantibodies.

Lupus erythematosus profundus (Kaposi-Irgang) with monoclonal gammopathy.

The appearance of subcutaneous nodules of lupus erythematosus profundus on the face and neck of a woman with a long history of lupus erythematosus (LE) is reported. Of note were the three distinct stages in the course of the disease: (1) discoid LE, first appearing at the age of 42; (2) systemic LE, appearing 10 years later; (3) LE profundus, appearing 21 years after the diagnosis of discoid LE was made. The finding of monoclonal gammopathy is of particular interest, although its relationship to the basic disease has not been clarified.

Histiocytosis X with skin lesions as the sole clinical expression.

The case is presented of a patient with histiocytosis X of the skin of some 25 years' duration. Extensive investigation failed to reveal any other signs of the disease in other organs. The light and electron microscope findings are described. The electron microscope study revealed an abundant cytoplasm with numerous mitochondria, vacuoles, dense bodies, a well-developed Golgi apparatus and numerous Langerhans' cell granules.

The isolation of keratinophilic fungi from soils in Israel. A preliminary report.

One hundred and fourteen soil samples collected from various areas of Israel were screened for the presence of keratinophilic fungi. Five species were isolated from the 59 positive samples, viz: C. keratinophilum--22 strains, C. evolceanui--18, C. serratus Eidam--10, M. gypseum--T. terrestre--4. Most of the geophilic organisms were recovered from garden soil, road-side and sandy-soil specimens. The importance of these findings is briefly discussed.

Saprophytic occurrence of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum gypseum in the coats of healthy laboratory animals. (Preliminary report).

A group of 199 healthy laboratory animals, comprising 63 guinea pigs; 58 white mice. 47 rats and 31 rabbits, was sampled for the presence of pathogenic dermatophytes. T. mentagrophytes, var. granulare, was isolated in 10% (5-guinea pigs, 6 mice, 6 rats and 2 rabbits) and M. gypseum was found in 7 animals (3 guinea pigs, 3 mice and one rat). No ringworm lesions were observed in the respective animals. This is the first report on such findings in Israel.
