[Ultrasound of the knee joint: normal values and changes in rheumatoid arthritis].

The bursa suprapatellaris, infrapatellaris, the patella tendon, condylar cartilage, menisci and fossa poplitea were examined sonographically in 56 healthy persons in defined sections. References for normal findings are given. The examination of 22 patients with rheumatoid arthritis revealed joint effusions, Baker cysts, synovial hypertrophy, intraarticular septae and changes in the echogenicity of the synovial fluid.

Adult

Staphylococcus aureus--toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 antibody titers in serum of German women.

In a prospective study the distribution of Toxic-1 (TSST-1) antibody titers was proved by 236 menstruating, tampon using volunteers. They are divided in 7 different age groups. Up to 11% of the volunteers under 25 years had no TSST-1 antibody-titers at all. Over 25 years of age this could be detected. In the group over 40 years of age 98% were found with antibody-titers up than 1:100. So it may be suggested that there is no general causal relationship between any type of tampon on TSS.

Adolescent

[Value of physical parameters and digital signal processing in tissue differentiation].

It was the aim of this study to improve tissue characterization using ultrasonic scatter signals and image processing procedures by computer. Analysis of various tissue probes and phantoms showed that structures can be differentiated by scatter as a function of frequency and angle of scatter. The application of this method as an imaging system was realised by a reconstruction algorithm to compute scatter images. By means of analysing images of the thyroid and prostate we found that the detection rate of computerised texture analysis is much higher than that of visual evaluation.

Diagnosis, Differential

[Qualification and quality control in sonography].

On the basis of guidelines issued by the Kassenärztliche Vereingung Hessen, some criteria for the application of sonographic examinations are presented. Minimal requirements for sonographic equipment in certain specialties are mentioned, and it is pointed out how not only case history and clinical examination but also one's own sonographic evidence are important for a accurate sonographic diagnosis.

Abdomen

[Quantitative technics in ultrasonic diagnosis].

This paper presents techniques for computer-aided analysis of medical ultrasonic images. Methods of image processing, feature extraction and a classification algorithm for tissue characterization are described. Based on these techniques a pattern recognition system for semi-automatic analysis of ultrasonic images has been developed and proved within three clinical studies, which aimed to improve the ultrasound diagnosis of the prostate, the thyroid and the female breast. The results show that computer analysis of ultrasonic images is capable of providing a quantitative diagnosis as well as of differentiating tumor lesions by sonography.

Breast Neoplasms

[Effect of menstrual hygiene (tampons vs pads) and of the form of contraception on pH and bacterial infection of the vagina].

In menstrual hygiene vaginal tampons are preferred. Supposedly intravaginal application causes discharge. Healthy women using pads as well as tampons were examined before, during, and after menstruation. During two menstrual cycles vaginal pH was measured, bacteriological and mycological cultures were set up. The results indicated no changes of cervical-vaginal-secretion, nor was the pH changed. Taking the used contraceptive method into consideration, we found that intrauterine devices and oral contraceptives caused most of bacterial discharge and the expected shifting to alcaline pH. No increase of vaginal fungus was noted. The use of intravaginal tampons for menstrual bleeding therefore had no ill effects.

Adolescent

[Ultrasonic examination of the prostate, with rating apparatus for tumor recognition (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: The prostate was examined by ultrasonic waves to diagnose tumorous changes of the organ. We scanned directly from the abdominal wall through the full bladder (transvesical). The classification of the resulting B-pictures is based on patterns that are specific for normal, adenomatous, or cancerous tissue. The results show that adenomas and carcinomas are recognizable in 85% of the examined patients by ultrasonic waves and can be differentiated from normal prostate tissue. Diagnosis, Computer-Assisted

[Effects of lowly dosed gestagen pill Exlutona on carbohydrate and fat metabolism (author's transl)].

Due to the precautions stopping of megestrol containing oral contraceptives the prescription of oral contraceptives has again become problematic. Oral contraceptives taken over a longer period can cause occasionally side effects which then cause a stopping of these medicaments. In order to get a survey of possible effects on the carbohydrate and fat metabolism 60 patients at the age of 16-26 years who had not been pregnant were observed over a longer period and their laboratory parameters (serum insulin, triglycerides, cholesterol, total lipids) were controlled. Significant changes were only found in the total lipids in the sense of a reduction of the total lipid level. A marked reduction was found with the triglycerides. Basing on these results and taking into consideration the occasionally occurring menstrual irregularity this lowly dosed gestagen pill Exlutona can be recommended not only to young girls but also to patients who often suffer from a relative contraindication because of adiposity, hypertension and subclinical diabetes.
