Effects of alkali metal ions on some virulence traits of Candida albicans.

The effects of the alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+ and K+) on the growth and on certain virulence factors (adhesion, cell-surface hydrophobicity and germinating ability) of Candida albicans were determined. High concentrations of these ions displayed an inhibitory effect on the growth of the Candida cells; preincubation in their presence showed a negative effect on all virulence factors studied. The changes induced during the preincubation remained there even when high concentration of the ions was removed from the cell suspension. In contrast, a considerable growth was found at high Na+ and K+ concentrations. Although alkali metal ions significantly decreased certain virulence traits of the fungus they did not totally inhibit adhesion and germ-tube formation. This suggests that C. albicans may represent a health hazard even at a high salt concentration.

[Polysomnography in the prevention of crib death].

The authors stress the importance of polysomnography--a new electrophysiologic method--in the prevention of SIDS (cot death). SIDS is the most important and frequent cause of infant mortality between 1 and 12 months of age in western countries (nowadays between 1-2/1000!). In Hungary the frequency is not so high. In the last few years the incidence declined after the "back to sleep" campaigns, but to reach further success, it is very important to seek the so called "risk" babies. The unique cause of cot death is not yet understood exactly, but some instability in respiration (mostly during the sleep) is one of the accepted principal basic factors. The mentioned new method helps in choosing the SIDS risk infants from the "normal" population, allows to examine their respiratory irregularity or even disorders during the sleep and gives possibility for the prevention of lethal apneas. The authors describe the details of the prevention in case of abnormal polysomnography in their other publications.

[Effect of Chinoin-103 on K(+)-activated pNPPase in the rat heart].

Effect of a new beta receptor blocking agent, an aryl oxybutanolamine derivative, the Chinoin--103 on K(+)-activated pNPP-ase activity has been studied. Propranolol and practolol were used as reference substances. It has been established that Chinoin-103 in concentration of 10(-4) M significantly hindered total pNPP-ase activity. On the other hand base pNPP-ase activity did not significantly change on the effect of the highest investigable concentration. Study of enzyme kinetic parameters has shown that decrease of base pNPP-ase activity can be attributed to decrease of reaction rate (Vmax decreases) at the same time enzyme affinity to pNPP substrate significantly increases (Km decreases). Taking into consideration the structural similarity of propranolol and Chinoin--103 it is presumable that Chinoin--103 can interact with components of membrane like propanolol and impediment of pNPP-ase activity can be attributed to the interaction.
