Development and psychokinetic therapy of children suffering from West Syndrome--an overview.

Paper presents reasons leading to the West Syndrome, disturbances occurring in the child's development and possible rehabilitation programmes. Psychological rehabilitation of a child with West Syndrome is multilateral, but its main aim is to improve the quality of life, social adaptation and optimizing of the cognitive functioning. Taking into consideration the psychokinetic retardation occurring in the West Syndrome because of prenatal, perinatal or postnatal disturbances apart from pharmacotherapy an intensive psychokinetic stimulation based on plasticity of the brain should be stressed out. Only the complex, intensive and long lasting rehabilitation of a child may secure to it the best possible development.

Generation of superoxide anion and induction of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase in bean leaves infected with pathogenic fungi.

Generation of superoxide anion (O2-.) and peroxidase activity were significantly increased in bean leaves infected with incompatible and compatible pathogens: Botrytis fabae and Botrytis cinerea, respectively, but the induction was greater on direct inoculation with B. fabae, than with B. cinerea. A slightly higher O2-. level was also detected in the parts of leaves surrounding the inoculation side. Overproduction of O2-. was observed earlier than the increase in peroxidase activity. Pretreatment of the leaves with methyl jasmonate enhanced both O2-. production and peroxidase activity following inoculation with B. cinerea. Induction of superoxide dismutase activity after the infection was less pronounced than changes in O2-. level. The differences in the rate of NADH oxidation in the extracts from control and inoculated leaves, correlated with the differences in the rate of O2-. production. The results indicate that O2-. level is one of the essential factors responsible for the difference in the interactions between bean plant and compatible and incompatible pathogens.

Role of T and B lymphocytes in the intrauterine infection of newborns.

The material studied comprised 90 full-term and premature infants with the symptoms of the intrauterine infection, 90 full-term and premature healthy infants (control group) and 120 mothers. T and B lymphocytes were identified by the rosette method (E and EAC rosettes) and the cytoenzymatic method determining the activity of the nonspecific acid esterase (esterase-positive T lymphocytes and esterase-negative B lymphocytes). The results obtained revealed that the intrauterine and post-natally acquired bacterial infections induced immunological response in the fetuses and in the newborns. This was evidenced particularly by the increased level of IgA and IgM and by the increased percentage of lymphocytes B in the blood of infected infants. Moreover, the criteria of early diagnosis of the bacterial infection were determined.

Investigations on properdin activity in the mature and premature newborns with the intrauterine infection.

Properdin level was determined in amniotic fluid, venous blood serum of mothers, umbilical cord blood serum and venous blood of 4-day-old newborns infected intrauterinally. Investigations were performed in 30 babies born at term and 15 premature babies born in the 31st-37th weeks of pregnancy. The control group comprised 30 mature and 15 premature healthy babies. It was observed that among the mature as well as premature infants, in the cases of the intrauterine infections properdin level, was significantly higher in venous blood serum of mothers and venous blood of 4-day-old infants. However, no significant changes in properdin level in umbilical cord blood were noted.

The evaluation of extended analysis of serum, amniotic fluid and cardiotocography in the management of pregnancy complicated by immunization in Rh or Kell antigens.

The estimation of protein and bilirubin concentration together with checking the activity of LDH, AspAT, AlAT and Ech in maternal serum and amniotic fluid was performed with intention to improve the accuracy of antenatal prediction in hemolytic disease of newborns. With the same intention, the cardiotocography was introduced. After study on forty-six pregnancies, the usefulness of estimation of optical density, protein and bilirubin concentration in amniotic fluid and calculation of bilirubin/protein ratio was confirmed. The other investigated methods appeared useless.

The use of plasmapheresis in pregnancy with antenatal prediction of a serious hemolytic disease due to Rh immunization.

Plasmapheresis was performed on twelve women with antenatal prediction of severe hemolytic disease due to Rh or Kell alloimmunization. No complications in mothers or newborn infants due to this treatment were observed neither during pregnancy nor in post-deliver period. In two patients the increase of antibody titer was not prevented. In four cases the fetus was not saved.

Some aspects of the bacteriologic and immunologic status in parturient women and newborns.

In the search for new methods of diagnosing or suspension of intrauterine infection, bacteriologic methods were used, sections of the placenta were examined, content of IgG, IgA and IgM immunoglobulins was determined, and neutrophilic leukocytes in peripheral blood were counted in the parturient women and their children, and in neonates polymorphonuclear leukocytes were also counted in gastric smears. The studies were carried out in two groups. Group I was composed of 24 randomly selected parturient women and their children, and group II of parturient women and their children in whom infection was suspected. The results confirm the existence of defense mechanisms which protect against infection in most cases.

Lysozyme activity in parturient women and their newborns in cases of infection.

Using the method of Smolelis and Harstell, modified by Kopeć, lysozyme activity was assayed in parturient women in venous blood and fetal waters, and in healthy and infected newborns born in term or prematurely, in cord blood on the third and seventh days of life, and in cases of acquired infection on the third, seventh and 10th days of life. The assays showed statistically significant higher levels of lysozyme activity in cord blood and in later days of life in comparison with lysozyme activity in maternal venous blood and in fetal waters.
