Many-body interaction effects on the low-k structure of liquid Kr.

Neutron diffraction measurements and theoretical calculations of the structure factor S(k) of liquid Kr are extended to small k values (k<4 nm(-1)). The results show that many-body interaction contributions have an increasing effect on S(k) as k-->0, reaching at least 40% of the measured intensity. Both the phase diagram and the low-k structural data of dense Kr turn out to be closely reproduced by the hierarchical reference theory if additional many-body forces are taken into account by an augmented strength of the Axilrod-Teller triple-dipole potential. The experimental density derivative of S(k) is also used for a very sensitive test of the theories and interaction models considered here.

Neutron Brillouin scattering study of collective dynamics in a dense He-Ne gaseous mixture.

The dynamic structure factor S(k,omega) of a 77% He and 23% Ne gaseous mixture at T = 39.3 K and total number density n = 15.8 nm(-3) has been measured by inelastic neutron scattering at small angles. In the range of wave vectors studied, 0.7<k/nm(-1)<1.8, we find clear side peaks at frequencies following the hydrodynamic sound dispersion c k of the binary mixture (with c the adiabatic sound speed in the mixture). Surprisingly, neither fast modes nor a transition from normal to fast sound are observed in the above low- k region, indicating that hydrodynamic behavior persists up to k values which are larger than those predicted by theories and computer simulations.

Structure of gaseous Kr in the low-q region by neutron scattering and interaction potentials.

Accurate experimental information on the long-range triplet interactions in noble fluids, as well as on the two-body potential, can be obtained from the low-density behavior of the static structure factor S(q) in the small-q region. The results here reported of a recent low-q neutron diffraction investigation in Kr, devoted to undercritical densities in the range 2.4<n/nm(-3)<4.3, provide important indications on the pair interactions and allow also a reliable analysis of irreducible three-body potential effects on the measured structure, from which the triple-dipole Axilrod-Teller strength is extracted with unprecedented accuracy.

Evaluation of Serratia peptidase in acute or chronic inflammation of otorhinolaryngology pathology: a multicentre, double-blind, randomized trial versus placebo.

The efficacy and tolerability of Serratia peptidase were evaluated in a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 193 subjects suffering from acute or chronic ear, nose or throat disorders. Treatment lasted 7-8 days, with the drug or placebo being administered at a rate of two tablets three times a day. After 3-4 days' treatment, significant symptom regression was observed in peptidase-treated patients. There was also a significant reduction in symptoms after 7-8 days for patients in both treatment groups but the response was more marked in those patients receiving the active drug. Statistical comparison between the two groups confirmed the greater efficacy and rapid action of the peptidase against all the symptoms examined at both stages. Tolerance was found to be very good and similar for both groups. It is concluded that Serratia peptidase has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic and fibrinolytic activity and acts rapidly on localized inflammation.
