What are purchasers looking for in managed care quality?

Spurred by competition and the growth of managed care, providers are seeking new approaches for satisfying the needs of health care purchases. Increasingly, these purchasers are focusing on the value of managed care arrangements, especially the degree to which they manage quality. Underlying the emerging focus on quality are concerns about "undercare," potential legal liability, and the economics of quality. Purchasers are sensitive to the quality of service and the experience of their patients, as well as the clinical quality of the care they receive, and many employers are now engaged in a systematic effort to assess both of these dimensions of quality. The emergence of national data banks, practice standards, and accreditation programs offers additional tools for strengthening provider accountability for quality.

The remote practice network: new concept in health care delivery.

It is widely acknowledged that a trend toward greater competition is creating dramatic changes in the way that health care is provided in the United States. Physicians and hospitals, in particular, face a difficult period of adjustment as the nation's health care system increasingly turns toward the competitive model. Physicians, particularly those in leadership positions, must meet the challenge of competition by developing and implementing effective coping strategies. Medical directors and other physicians in key leadership and decision-making positions have a responsibility to their institutions, their patients, and indeed their own careers to recognize and understand the implications of current trends in health care delivery. This article discusses an innovative approach to competition in today's challenging health care marketplace.

Arizona network improves providers' competitiveness.

In the September/October issue of Physician Executive, the Remote Practice Network (RPN) health care delivery system concept was introduced and explained. In this article, the concept is illustrated by a description of Arizona HealthSource (AHS), an RPN developed in Phoenix, Arizona. AHS's design, evolution, and operation demonstrate both the competitive pressures that force hospitals into taking new initiatives and the exciting alternative offered by an RPN. Arizona HealthSource serves the Phoenix, Ariz., region, a highly competitive health care marketplace. The organization was started by St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in cooperation with Magliaro & McHaney, a consulting firm with offices in Atlanta, Ga., and La Jolla, Calif. AHS is currently managed under contract by Magliaro & McHaney, which develop the RPN concept and which designs, implements, markets, and manages health care delivery system.
