Peer review: self help for occupational health nurses.

Nurses validate their actions with other nurses whose knowledge and skills they value. Where opportunities for evaluation do not exist, enthusiasm and creativity can wane. Peer review is a process that includes education, case writing, evaluation, and research. Peer review is not punitive. It is a professional review and has no place in personnel records or periodic evaluation by one's supervisors. Local constituencies can provide peer review programs for their members as part of their monthly meetings.

Case study: mariner's TB.

Mycobacterium marinum causes tuberculosis in fish and shellfish and cutaneous lesions in humans. It is transmitted from fish to humans by inoculation. The case presented involved a nodule on the wrist and was misdiagnosed as arthritis; the nodule was excised. Symptoms of tuberculosis persisted over a 2-year period. This case study can be generalized to a population of workers in the seafood industry, water hobbyists, and fish and shellfish enthusiasts. Education and research is needed to inform and protect populations at high risk for this disease.
