[Comparison of intra-uterine devices, Copper-T-200 and Dana-Super-Fix-Cuprum (author's transl)].

The two above IUDs were compared by application to 411 patients, with the Copper-T 200 being used on 239 and the Dana-Super-Fix-Cuprum on 172. Gravidity occurred to 2.9 or 5.8 per cent of all probands. The Pearl indices were 2.6 or 4.2. Spontaneous expulsion was observed in 2.5 or 3.5 per cent of all cases. Devices had to be extracted from 9.6 or 11.6 per cent of the patients. Adnexitis was diagnosed in 0.4 or 1.7 per cent of the cases. Continuity values were 85.0 per cent for the Copper-T-200 and 79.1 per cent for the Dana-Super-Fix-Cuprum. No substantial difference in effectiveness was found to exist between the two above copper-based intra-uterine devices.

[Vaginal stump recurrence in carcinoma of the corpus uteri].

Among 403 women who had an operation for a cancer of the corpus uteri, and a subsequent radiation (3400 R HD) a total of 10 (2.48%) suffered from a recurrence of the cancer at the vaginal stump. For none of these ten women a 5-year-cure can be reported. To prevent a recurrence of the cancer at the vaginal stump, it is recommended that a vaginal collar should be removed during the operation. Moreover, an increased dose of irradiation of the small pelvis (6000 R HD), a postoperative vaginal Caesium-137-filling, and a preoperative filling of the uterus with radiation carriers is recommended.

[Interruption before and after March 9, 1972].

The report covers 1000 interruptions prior to the new legal regulation of the interruption of gravidity of March 9, 1972, and 1000 interruptions after this date. The increasing number of interruptions is associated with a high reduction in the number of abortions and a falling birth rate (1971: birth rate 3956, 1973: birth rate 2806). A comparison is made of the age groups (average age of group 1: 33,4 years; of group 2: 28,5 years), marital status (unmarried women of group 1: 10,8%, of group 2: 23,7%), parity (56,6 per cent of all the women who had an interruption after the new legal regulation had born no child or one child), and rate of early complications (group 1: 4,2%, group 2: 6,3%).

Time-variant conductance of bilayer membranes treated with monazomycin and alamethicin.

Experimental data obtained on bilayer membranes treated with either of two antibiotics, monazomycin or alamethicin, are presented showing the marked difference in the time course of the rise and subsequent decay of the conductance in response to a positive and negative step of potential established by means of a voltage-clamp feedback circuit. The variation of the conductance with time in these model systems qualitatively mimics the behavior of the "potassium conductance" of squid giant axons and other excitable biological systems; namely, the rise of the conductance to the steady state requires a longer time than its decay to the resting state. For the alamethicin system, the decay time becomes very brief-as short as 50 musec-as either the salt or the alamethicin concentration is reduced, while the rise time remains several seconds. This marked brevity of the decay time versus the rise time may have implications for the mechanism underlying the formation of conducting channels in such membranes.

Intergenerational correlation of effective family size in early Québec (Canada).

The use of a comprehensive demographic database of the early French Canadian population (1608-1800) reveals an almost null impact of parents' fertility on children's fertility (r approximately 0.01-0.05), which contradicts the commonly held view that family size has a tendency to run in families. However, in this population, there is a clear transmission from one generation to the next of the effective family size within a given geographical area (EFS, defined as the number of children that settle per settled individual). Three types of correlations between EFS of parents and children are presented in order to account for the impact of socio-demographic differentials. Individuals who belong to a large sibship and who settled in a given subdivision tend to encourage the settlement of a high number of their own children in the same subdivision (r approximately 0.1-0.3). An additional correlation was introduced to see if geographically-based differentials of EFS can account for the differential of founders' regional genetic contribution. The analysis shows that EFS correlation has a definite impact on the concentration of a population's gene pool (it increases it by approximately 20%-45%), and partly accounts for the differences between subdivisions in this regard.

An abnormal concentration of cases of Rendu-Osler disease in the Valserine valley of the French Jura: a genealogical and demographic study.

An important concentration of patients with Rendu-Osler disease occurs in the Valserine valley of the French Jura. A study of marriages shows that, in spite of its somewhat remote location, the valley cannot be considered an isolate, but that, on the contrary, exogamy is widely practised. Only 17.8% of the genes of inhabitants during the present century can be traced to the original population, but persons affected with the disease belong to a subgroup of the population which has lived in the villages for more than 10 generations. All the patients in 85 sibships are related. The smallest number of originator couples who lived at the beginning of the eighteenth century amounts to 16, the unique originator may therefore have lived approximately four generations earlier. However, as other patients who lived at the periphery of the Valserine valley do not appear to be related to any patients living in the valley, and because there has been considerable immigration into the valley, a number of hypotheses to explain the distribution of the disease in the region remain possible.

Population structure and immigration; a study of the Valserine valley (French Jura) from the 17th century until the present.

The establishment of the genealogies and biographies of inhabitants of selected villages from the Haut-Jura from the 17th century up to the present day has enabled us to demonstrate the major role of immigration on the genetic structure of a population. The evaluation of the effective descendance of native versus immigrant couples shows the imbalance of demographic contribution in favour of the first category. Immigrant couples account for 26% of all couples with at least one offspring in the valley, but account for 7.2% of all couples with an effective descendance. In our opinion, this effective immigration reflects in a much better way the measurement of immigration impact on population genetic parameters, especially the genetic 'opening' of the population due to immigration. This measurement of the effective descendance divides the population into two major groups: a core of stable lineage characterized by 70% of couples with an effective descendance, 'surrounded' by an unstable group from which only 30% of couples have an effective descendence in the population. Furthermore, from any given point in time this difference between the two groups can be observed among their descendants during the following generations. The existence of such a core can be explained by the social history of the valley, and shows that any specific unfavorable genetic fostered by the core can be locked within the population and transmitted throughout generations.

[Mitochondrial DNA polymorphism reveals a genetic differentiation between ethnic groups in the population of Jerba].

Jerba is an island situated in the South-East of Tunisia were some ethnic groups (Arabs, Berbers, Blacks, Jewishs and others) cohabit for centuries. The religion and cultural differences have represented an obstacle to a mixture between these groups. In order to evaluate the genetic differentiation between the muslim groups (Arabs, Berbers and Blacks), we have analysed the polymorphism of a mitochondrial DNA coding region. The cytochrome oxydase coding region (COII) was amplified by PCR in 57 Arabs, 42 Berbers and 16 Blacks. The amplified products were analysed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). Genetic distances were calculated by using the AMOVA program. The values of these distances were significantly different between Arabs and Blacks, and between Berbers and Blacks but not between Arabs and Berbers. So That, to refine the evaluation of genetic diversity between Arabs and Berbers, we have analysed the polymorphism of a second mitochondrial coding region which encodes for the fifth unit of NADH deshydrogenase (ND5). Eleven haplotypes were defined from the resulting data of mitochondrial COII and ND5 polymorphism and a significant genetic distance between Arabs and Berbers was computed.
