Analysis of human back shape using surface curvatures.

A method for the evaluation of surface measurements of the human back is presented. A shape analysis is carried out in terms of surface curvature. This is calculated using differential geometry of surfaces. Similar to other invariant shape parameters, the surface curvature does not depend on a coordinate system and is thus independent of the patient's position. The advantages of such an invariant shape analysis are discussed and first results are presented.

[Pressure on the bearing surface of the hip joint (author's transl)].

The 3-dimensional geometry of the articular surface of the hip joint was reconstructed using data obtained from ap radiograms of the pelvis. Combining the results of this calculation with data published on the weight distribution of adult persons, the mean and the standard deviation of the pressure on the articular surface of the hip joint are calculated.

HLA-antigens in acute and chronic pancreatitis.

HLA-A and B-antigens were determined in 22 patients with acute and in 65 patients with chronic pancreatitis as well as in 165 healthy controls. There was a tendency of over- and underrepresentation of certain antigens indicating that there may be a genetically linked susceptibility of some patients to acute and chronic pancreatitis respectively. For further evaluation of these tendencies on a larger scale a multi-centre study is required.

[Asymptomatic chronic-persisting hepatitis B in a young child as source of infection of hepatitis B within a family (author's transl)].

Five members of an eight-member family fell ill with an acute icteric hepatitis B of the same subtype within eleven months. In all probability the source of the infection was a just over one-year-old fostered child with asymptomatic chronic persisting hepatitis B and signs of massive viraemia (usually high HBs antigen concentration, high virus-specific DNA-polymerase activity and positive HBe antigen test). No relation could be demonstrated between HLA constellation and illness in the family members. Since no specific treatment is available, the only possible prophylactic measure is to isolate the child in the present environment, to avoid further cases of the disease.

Endotoxin stimulated nitroblue-tetrazolium (NBT)-test in patients with hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism and other forms of hypocalcemia.

Endotoxin-stimulated NBT-tests were carried out in 15 patients with hypocalcemia of varying etiology and in 14 normocalcemic children free of infection. In the control group the formazan cell percentage (FCP) was 73.8 +/- 1.6% (range 63% to 83%). In 5 patients with hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism the FCP before treatment was lower than normal. Vitamin D3 therapy produced a rapid increase of serum calcium but normalisation of NBT-test was only achieved after a latent period of one or more months. Patients with hypocalcemic rickets and children with an acute relapse of the nephrotic syndrome also showed abnormal results. The clinical significance of the NBT-test in hypocalcemic conditions is discussed.

[Carcinoembryonic antigen in retinoblastomas (author's transl)].

In 47 patients (46 children and 1 adult) with unilateral and bilateral retinoblastoma, the titer of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was determined. The CEA titer of children with active retinoblastomas was 1.44 +/- 0.26 ng/ml (x +/- SEM). Those patients whose retinoblastoma was inactivated by therapy did not show a significantly lower CEA titer. In the group of children with one eye removed because of a unilateral retinoblastoma, the CEA titer was significantly (P less than 0.1) lower. The globes of 25 children were examined histologically. In those cases with invasion of the optic nerve or choroid, the CEA titer was significantly higher (P less than 0.1) as compared with those where the tumor was limited to the retina alone.

[Reconstruction of the spacial configuration of the spine from stereoradiographs (author's transl)].

The value of stereo-radiographs was demonstrated by its application to scoliotic spines. Individual vertebrae were measured with a stereo-comparator. The spacial co-ordinates of standard points on the body were evaluated by a computer. Subsequently the position and size of the vertebral bodies were obtained by reconstructing a model. In this manner a spine could be built up which spacially resembled the original spine. The model spine was demonstrated on a display. The computer was able to produce any required view of the spine. An impression of depth is produced by simulated rotation of the display. By this means an excellent visual impression of the spine in three dimensions is produced. The measurements obtained can be used as the basis for further calculation.
