We experienced 66 cases of abdominal aortic repair, which contained 49 cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and 17 cases of high leveled arteriosclerotic occlusion (high ASO), since March, 1977 till December, 1985. Operative procedures were 44 cases of Y-graft replacement and 5 cases of tube graft interposition for all of AAA, and Y bypass grafting for high ASO. As early gastrointestinal complications after these repairs, paralytic intestinal ileus was found 9 cases in AAA group and no case in high ASO group. Mechanical intestinal ileus needed surgical lysis was found one case in AAA group and one case in high ASO group, upper gastrointestinal bleeding was found 2 cases in both groups, transient ischemic colitis 4 cases in AAA group, and liver dysfunction 4 cases in AAA group. The most frequent complication was paralytic intestinal ileus. In the comparison between 9 cases of paralytic intestinal ileus and others, operative time of the former was significantly longer than that of the latter. But there were no differences in the incidence of other factors. We think that, operative procedure must be chosen in consideration of shortening the operative time. And careful management of gastrointestinal tract and pre-operative correction of general conditions, especially the correction of serum electrolytes and nutrition are the most important.
The teratogenic effects of feeding pregnant mice with the levels of zinc that were severely deficient (0.5 ppm), marginally deficient (10 ppm), or zinc replete (50 ppm) were studied. All groups of animals were fed the experimental diet from 1-18 days of gestation (dg) except for one additional group which received 0.5 ppm Zn diet from 5-14 dg. The effects of a single dose of 2.0 mg/kg of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) injected on 8 dg in mice fed the marginally zinc-deficient or the zinc-replete diets were also investigated. We found that more than 95% of fetuses exhibited a variety of external and skeletal malformations in the severely zinc-deficient groups and that the frequency of malformed fetuses in the marginally zinc-deficient group was similar to that of the control animals. Injection of CdCl2 produced a significant increase in the incidence of malformations in the marginally zinc-deficient mice, but not in zinc-replete animals. These results demonstrate that severe zinc deficiency is teratogenic in mice and that a marginal zinc intake influences the teratogenic potential of cadmium.

Hemangiopericytoma is a rare capillary tumor that was first described and named by Stout and Murray in 1942. A case of hemangiopericytoma in the pelvic retroperitoneum is reported. The patient, a 57 year old man, was admitted because of dysuria. He underwent extirpation of the tumor with the rectum by low anterior resection. The pathological diagnosis was malignant hemangiopericytoma, and Adriamycin was administered to prevent recurrence or metastasis. He has been free from any recurrence or metastasis for the last eight months. Twenty cases of hemangiopericytoma in the retroperitoneum including our case, were collected from Japanese literature and reviews. Hemangiopericytoma, especially in the retroperitoneal space, should be regarded as a highly malignant tumor. Early aggressive therapy and long term follow up are recommended because the tumor characteristically produces late local recurrence and metastasis.
