[Mechanism of generation and perception of electric fields by honey bees].

Generation and reception mechanisms of electrostatic and alternating, currents by bees are studied. It is shown that generation of electric fields is concerned with the properties of body integuments to carry a comparative large electrostatic charge. Transport of charged bodies is percieted by bees with the help of antennae subjected to the action of coulon powers. Perception of a alternating artificially generated electric fields is mainly concerned with physiological influence of induced currents flowing in the site of contact of bees to one another or to current-conducting bodies. The studies performed did not show the existence of specialized organs for the generation and perception of electric fields.

[Honeybee phonoreceptors].

Bee phonoreceptors are revealed by electrophysiological method. These are hair sensillae located between facet eyes and occipital commissure. The region of the highest sensitivity of receptors in within the range of the maximum energy of various sound signals used in the communication of bees. The receptors exactly distinguish the signals according to their duration and intensity.

[Effect of high intensity magnetic field on the processes of early growth in plant seeds and development of honeybees].

The influence of magnetic field on the early growth processes in plant seeds and the postembryonic development of honeybees was studied. Some general trends in the effects of magnetic field and differences in the tolerance of plant seeds and developing honeybees to its action were revealed. Some factors that may be responsible for a low reproducibility of magneto-biological effects are discussed.

[Destabilization of the cardiac function of an insect by a low-frequency electric field].

The effect of high-intensity low-frequency electric field on the functioning of the heart of an insect was estimated from electrocardiogram. It was found that electric field causes a disturbance of the cardiac function. Its stressing activity is mainly related to the excitation of the insect by induced currents whose exciting action is enhanced by vibration in trichoid sensillas and antennas.

[Comparative analysis of thermoregulation in the nests of certain species of social insects].

Studies have been made on thermal regulation in the nests of families of the honey bee Apis mellifera, wasp Dolihovespula silvestris and bumblebees Bombus terrestris, B. agrorum and B. lapidaris during their maximum development. It was shown that thermoregulation significantly stimulated the brood in the nest. Among the species investigated, the highest thermoregulatory capacities are exhibited by honey bees, this fact being associated with the large number of individuals in their colonies. During cooling, bees group around the brood and their bodies make a cover of thermal insulation. Sheltering of the nests plays the main role in heat preservation of wasps and bumblebees. The latter, using contact method of heating of cells with the brood, provide rather constant temperature for its development. Honey bees, wasps and bumblebees react to overheating in the nests essentially in a similar way, i. e. by active aeration of their nests by vigorous wing beatings. The frequency of beatings increases with the increase in temperature.

[Morphophysiological effects of an ultrahigh frequency field].

The influence of ultrahigh-frequency field on a honey bee vitality was investigated. Different velocity of heating under the ultrahigh-frequency field action was found for the head, chest and abdomen parts of adult bees. The heating of the body was dependent upon the stage of their development as well. Ultrahigh-frequency field depressed life capacity and induced morphological abnormalities. Modifying influence of ultrahigh-frequency field on morphogenesis events was possible in the case of discrete ultrahigh-frequency action, that had not induced life-dangerous heating of maturing bee body.

[Structure of acoustic signals in the larvae of Dolihovespula wasps and Vespa crabre hornets].

Studies have been made on factors which account for the structure and noise-resistance of signals emitted by larval wasps and hornets. It was shown that temporal structure of a signal is determined by the roughness of cell walls against which the larva rubs by its mandibulae. Spectral structure of a signal depends on the size and configuration of combs. Maximum of spectral energy of each signal lies in the same frequency band from the very first up to the last impulse. This fact together with constant duration of the signal makes the latter different from other similar sounds emmitted by other members of a wasp family.

[Temperature dependence of the electrical activity of wasp cardiac function].

Changes in the temporal structure and amplitude of electrical fluctuations connected with the heart function were revealed by the electrophysiological method. In the range of optimum temperatures, high- and low-amplitude impulses are predominantly generated. Their amplitudes differ approximately by a factor of three. Hypo- and hyperthermia stimulate pauses in heart function. Their duration increases with the unfavorable effect of temperature. During the activation of heart function, high-amplitude fluctuations are predominantly generated. In cold torpor, all forms of electric activity stop, whereas in the active state they are resumed.
