[Radiotherapy of cancer of the uterine cervix (author's transl)].

A general introduction is followed by a discussion of the results obtained with radiotherapy in cancer of the uterine cervix. Different radiotherapeutic procedures, treatment planning and dosimetric practices, reactions due to irradiation, results and complications are mentioned.

Dose-Response Relationship, Radiation

[Results of radiotherapy of gastrointestinal malignancies].

Irradiation offers only a palliative treatment for malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. Cancer of the rectum and rectosigmoid represents an exception; above all, preoperative irradiation improves a five year survival rate up to 15%. There is a better prognosis for non-Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's lymphomas of the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Colonic Neoplasms

Megavoltage therapy of glioblastoma multiforme.

Supervolt radiation therapy produced no improved survival rates in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme as compared to orthovolt therapy. Survival times of more than one year or two years must still be considered a rarity. The application of computer techniques to the calculation of dose distributions greatly enhances the optimization of treatment planning. Tumour doses of 5,000 to 7,000 rad are considered necessary, and are dangerously close to the dose levels tolerated by brain tissue. Improvements could conceivably be expected from a) combinations of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, b) intra-arterial application of radiating substances with tumour affinity, c) neutron therapy. Whether or not such measures will in the future produce improved therapeutic results remains to be seen.

Brain

[Radiation therapy of cervix carcinoma].

From 1954 up to Jul 1974, 739 carcinomas of the cervix were treated by irradiation either before or after surgery or by sole irradiation. Results and experiences are reported.
