[Lethal intoxication by acebutolol (author's transl)].

Report on suicidal intoxication by acebutolol (prent). Thin-layer and gas chromatography as well as spectrophotometry were used to show the presence of and to determine acebutolol and its aniline derivative arising from hydrolysis in all tissues. The highest concentrations were found in urine and liver.

Acebutolol

Centrifugation of stallion semen and its storage in large volume straws.

In a study of different methods of handling stallion semen for deep freezing, ejaculates were divided into 3 portions, the first of which was diluted 1:2 with lactose--egg yolk--glycerol diluent and frozen in pellet form. The second aliquot was centrifuged without any diluent and the third portion was initially diluted with an experimental diluent (Merck) and then centrifuged for 5 min at 1000 g. The second and third portions were frozen in large volume straws each of which contained one whole insemination dose of 1 or 2 X 10(8) progressively motile spermatozoa. The addition of a diluent to the semen before centrifugation and freezing (portion 3) resulted in an increase in sperm motility after thawing. Motility was further increased by the use of a recently developed diluent after centrifugation and before freezing. In one fertility trial, 12 of 19 mares (63%) conceived following a single insemination of frozen semen during one oestrous period.

The effect of vesiculectomy on seminal characteristics in the stallion.

Successful unilateral extirpation of an inflamed seminal vesicle in a stallion led to systematic trials of the influence of a reduction and absence of the secretion of this gland upon semen characteristics. Operations were performed by the method described for the bull. The volume of ejaculates dropped and sperm concentration per ml increased in each of 2 stallions from which the seminal vesicles had been uni- or bi-laterally removed. Total sperm number and motility remained uninfluenced, but the percentage of eosin-stained spermatozoa increased in the unilaterally operated stallion and the percentage of abnormal spermatozoa increased significantly in both. Concentration of citric acid per ml and per ejaculate was significantly reduced after bilateral vesiculectomy. Ergothioneine concentration per ml increased in the unilaterally and in the bilaterally operated stallion.

An analysis of stallion fertility rates (foals born alive) from the breeding documents of the Landgestüt Celle over a 158-year period.

An evaluation of the foaling rate achieved in the Hannoverian breed in Germany between 1815 and 1973 showed that during this period no improvement of the reproductive rate was achieved. The decennial foaling percentage remained within 50--60% except for those decades which included the two World Wars and their aftermaths. The annual foaling percentage remained maximal until the number of mares covered/stallion rose above 80 and it also remained high throughout the reproductive life of the stallion. Only in the oldest stallion (32 years) was there a significant lowering of fertility.

Animal Husbandry

[Criminological aspects of the clarification of alkaloid intoxications (author's transl)].

At the turn of the century medical and suicidal alkaloid intoxications, especially with atropine, morphine and strychnine were relatively frequently observed. Apart from morphine, they have today largely disappeared from the view of the general practitioner so that the associations are difficult to interpret in spite of clinical observation. This is shown in 5 observations of which only three could be confirmed as atropine poisoning; one was fatal. The symptoms of intoxication by atropine (or scopolamine) may be misinterpreted as alcoholization, so that chemical analysis is not thought of soon enough. In the differential diagnosis more use should be made of the possibility of a blood alcohol determination in the hospital, but combined effects must, of course, be reckoned with.

Alcoholism

[On the detection of clomethiazole in urine (author's transl)].

It may become necessary to prove that clomethiazole (Distraneurin) has been taken when supervising addicts, with traffic accidents under the influence of drugs and when the cause of death is unclear. Since the compound is almost completely metabolized in the body, a method has been developed to detect its main metabolite, 4-methyl-5-thiazole acetic acid in the urine. The acid can be precisely identified and determined by a combination of selective extractions, high-voltage electrophoresis and UV measurements.

Chlormethiazole

[Case report of a twin-monster, dicephalus, dibrachius (author's transl)].

The dicephalus dibrachius twin malformation is a rare developmental anomaly. Spontaeous birth is impossible. Prenatal diagnosis of this condition is difficult though essential to prevent danger to the life of the mother. Radiological examination before birth is necessary. Auscultation and bimanual examination only may lead to the erroneous diagnosis of a twin pregnancy, as in this case, where in the end a cesarean sectionwas performed because unseparated twins were suspected.

Abnormalities, Severe Teratoid

[Phantoms for the collection of genital secretions in stallions].

Practical experiences of the phantom method for collection of genital secretions from stallions are reported. Taking a phantom used in the Richard-Götze-Haus Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover as a prototype two further models slightly modified have been constructed, baring a flat hollow in the right side of the caudal phantom body for manual inserting of the Artificial Vagina. These three models fulfill four important conditions for routine use: (1) sufficient sexual attractivity for the stallions; 80-85% successful collections of presecretions out of a total of 1050 using the dummy and 70% successful semen collections from more than 240 in total; (2) solid and resistant construction; (3) easy cleaning and desinfection of the surface of the phantom to get representative samples; (4) firm installation on a hygienic floor.
