Abetalipoproteinemia (Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome). Muscle involvement.

A 26-year old male suffered from Abeta-lipoproteinemia (Bassen-Kornzweig disease). In addition to C.N.S. lesions, he had myopathy. A muscle biopsy revealed accumulation of ceroid pigment in the striated muscle. A few muscle fibers showed severe degeneration of the myofibrils. Fibroblasts and macrophages in the interstitial tissue contained abundant ceroid. The relation between ceroid accumulation, abetalipoproteinemia and vitamin E-deficiency is discussed.

Extrarenal Wilms' tumor: report of a case and review of the literature.

A case of an extrarenal Wilms tumor arising in the inguinal region of a 2-month-old boy is described. A review of the literature indicates that nine well-documented cases of extrarenal Wilms tumor have previously been described. Four of these tumors arose within teratomas. The remaining five cases, in which no teratomatous components were encountered, probably arose in embryologic rests of renal tissue.

Cell-mediated immunity to human myelin basic protein in schizophrenic patients.

Cell-mediated immune response to myelin human basic protein was studied by the macrophage migration inhibition test in patients suffering from schizophrenia. Eighteen out of 32 patients with chronic schizophrenia demonstrated human basic protein-induced inhibition of the migration index, while 4 out of 41 acute schizophrenics showed an inhibition of macrophage migration.

Transient neurogenic urinary retention.

A patient is described who developed painless urinary retention, which resolved spontaneously within 2 weeks. At the onset of his illness neurological examination did not manifest definite abnormalities, but the cerebrospinal fluid contained excess of protein and lymphocytes. Cystonometry was normal throughout the illness.

Cell-mediated immunity in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

The cell immune response, in vivo and in vitro, was investigated in eight patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Although the disease had been diagnosed at different stages and despite the persistently high titers of humoral antibodies, a definite deficiency of cellular immunity, as indicated by skin reactions to common antigens and by migration inhibition factor to specific antigens, was found in all the patients. The cellular immune response of two patients treated with small amounts of transfer factor was temporarily restored by their clinical state did not improve.

Association between myasthenia gravis and malignant lymphoma.

A reticulum cell sarcoma was diagnosed in a myasthenic patient 14 years after the first manifestations of myasthenia gravis. The association of myasthenia and malignancy, especially lymphoreticular, is discussed in view of an increasing number of similar reports in the literature. It is suggested that autoimmune diseases, myasthenia gravis and malignant processes might have a common underlying abnormal immune state related to thymic pathology.
