Efficacy of clorsulon for the treatment of experimentally induced infections of Fasciola hepatica in goats.

A dose titration study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of clorsulon against the adult stage of Fasciola hepatica in goats. Thirty-nine goats were experimentally infected with metacercariae of F hepatica. At 14 weeks after infection, each goat was assigned randomly to 1 of 5 groups. Goats in groups 1 to 4 received a single oral administration of clorsulon at dosages of 3.5, 7, 11, and 15 mg/kg of body weight, respectively. The fifth group of goats (control group) was infected with F hepatica, but were not treated with clorsulon. Postmortem examination of goats at 3 weeks after treatment revealed mean reductions in numbers of flukes of 83, 98, 99, and 100% for groups 1 to 4, respectively. Mean percentage of reduction in eggs following treatment of groups was 82, 98, 100, and 100%, respectively. The clinical effects of clorsulon in 24 goats that were not infected with F hepatica were studied. Goats in groups 1 to 3 received a single oral administration of clorsulon at dosages of 7, 21, and 35 mg/kg, respectively, every other day for a total of 3 doses/goat. Group-4 goats (control group) received a vehicle placebo. Goats in group 3 were subject to postmortem examination at 14 days after dosing. Abnormal signs or lesions that could be attributed to clorsulon were not found in any goat.

Phobias and hypnotizability: a reexamination.

25 phobic Ss were administered the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C) of Weitzenhoffer and E. R. Hilgard (1962). The mean SHSS:C score was 3.5 (S.D. = 2.6), which was lower than that obtained by comparison groups. The results are in direct opposition to previous results and the predictions of Frankel (1974; Frankel & M. T. Orne, 1976). Potential explanations for the discrepancy in results are discussed, including the possibility that previous studies used unrepresentative samples of phobics. It is suggested that hypnosis may sometimes play a role in the production of phobic symptoms but that other processes must be considered as well.

Adult

Disseminated Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection in a cow.

A cow with chronic diarrhea and weight loss caused by localization of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in the intestinal tract (Johne's disease) had gross and microscopic changes indicative of a disseminated infection. A direct association between the remote lesions and the intestinal infection was shown by isolation of M paratuberculosis from renal tissue, detection of intracellular M paratuberculosis antigen(s), using an indirect immunoperoxidase method, and by the characteristic granulomatous nature of the lesions. This case illustrates the potential for extra-intestinal lesions in M paratuberculosis infection of cattle and should cause veterinarians to consider mycobacterial disease when confronted with multinodular lesions of the bovine kidney. The immunoperoxidase method was useful in determining the cause of the inflammatory lesion in which intact organisms were not evident.

Sexual criminality and hypnotizability.

Thirty-three sexual offenders, 18 of whom had been convicted of rape, nine of pedophilia, and six of incest, were studied. Two thirds of the subjects had histories of "spontaneous self-hypnotic" experiences (dissociations); seven of these were DSM-III multiples and six were probable multiples. This group had very high hypnotizability scores. The other one third without histories of "spontaneous self-hypnosis" had normal scores. It was concluded that spontaneous self-hypnosis contributed to the perpetration of the crimes in many of these cases, although other factors also directed the antisocial behaviors.

Adolescent

Posttraumatic stress disorder, hypnotizability, and imagery.

Twenty-six Vietnam veterans were studied to determine the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and hypnotizability. The intensity of their posttraumatic stress disorder was measured by a self-report. Their hypnotizability scores, vividness of imagery scores, and symptomatic profiles were also ascertained. Veterans with low or no posttraumatic stress disorder scores had normal hypnotizability scores and normal imagery scores, whereas those with high posttraumatic stress disorder scores had high hypnotizability scores and high imagery scores. The authors conclude that either combat traumas enhanced hypnotic potential in some veterans or that veterans with excellent hypnotic potential to begin with were more susceptible to posttraumatic stress.

Failure of superoxide dismutase to alter equine arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation, in vitro or ex vivo.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a free radical scavenger with anti-inflammatory activity, was administered IM to horses. Ex vivo platelet aggregation in response to arachidonic acid was monitored to determine whether exogenous SOD altered equine platelet prostaglandin metabolism. Preparations of platelet-rich plasma obtained before SOD administration were incubated with different concentrations of SOD and were aggregated with arachidonic acid. Superoxide dismutase did not exert a demonstrable effect, either ex vivo or in vitro. Aspirin abolished arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation in vitro. This indicates that SOD (in the resting state) does not exert an effect on platelet-derived free radicals that could alter the arachidonic acid pathway of equine platelets, that equine platelets do not release free radicals, or that equine platelets are insensitive to the products formed from free radicals by SOD.

Efficacy of fenbendazole and cambendazole against Muellerius capillaris in dairy goats.

Two anthelmintics, fenbendazole and cambendazole, were used in an attempt to eliminate Muellerius capillaris infections in a group of 44 goats. During the course of this study (508 days), M capillaris larvae were found in at least one fecal specimen from each of 22 of the 44 goats. All 44 goats were dewormed with fenbendazole (30 mg/kg of body weight) at the onset of this study (day 18). Two additional dewormings with fenbendazole at 4- to 8-week intervals were restricted to the goats that continued to shed M capillaris larvae. On the basis of routine fecal examinations, fenbendazole eliminated M capillaris larvae from the feces of 8 (36%) of these 22 goats. On day 253, cambendazole (60 mg/kg) was given orally to 17 of these 22 goats (2 of the 22 had died and 3 were not available for treatment); 13 of these goats were still shedding M capillaris larvae. Cambendazole eliminated M capillaris larvae from the feces of 10 (77%) of these 13 goats chronically infected with M capillaris.

Effects of heat stress during pregnancy on postpartum reproductive changes in Holstein cows.

Effects of heat stress during the last third of gestation on reproductive changes postpartum were studied in Holstein cows. Cows and heifers 160 to 190 d of gestation were assigned in June 1978 to shade (n = seven cows and two heifers) or no shade (n = eight cows and two heifers) management treatments. After parturition, all cows (n = 19) were moved to the milking herd and managed uniformly. On the day of calving and on each Monday, Wednesday and Friday thereafter until d 50 postpartum, jugular blood samples were collected. Beginning approximately 7 d postpartum, the reproductive tract of each cow was examined rectally after collection of blood samples. Estrus was monitored twice daily and cows were inseminated after d 45 postpartum. Prepartum heat stress increased 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) concentrations postpartum and increased the rate of uterine involution. Regardless of prepartum treatment, progesterone concentrations indicated that luteal phases had begun by d 12.4 +/- 1.3 postpartum, which was about 3 d before PGFM was basal. The first luteal phase lasted only 10.7 +/- .9 d. First estrus was not detected until d 32.3 +/- 4.8 postpartum. The previously gravid uterine horn had a negative effect on ovarian volume, diameter of the largest follicle and percentage of ovaries with a corpus luteum. However, prepartum heat stress attenuated this effect. This study indicates that heat stress prepartum had residual effects on postpartum reproductive changes, and that the previously gravid uterine horn exerted some control, which was attenuated by heat stress, over ovarian recrudescense. Even though heat stress prepartum affected sensitive measures of postpartum reproductive function, it did not alter days to first estrus, days open (102.3 +/- 13.1) or services/conception (2.5 +/- .3).
