Improving and integrating data systems for public health surveillance.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is the nation's principal health statistics agency, with a primary mission to collect, disseminate, and analyze health data. NCHS has a clear commitment to a wide range of improvements in surveillance and public health information systems. Building on its long history of conducting multipurpose surveys where the needs and interests of a variety of programmatic interests have to be accommodated, NCHS is working on a number of fronts to improve and better integrate data systems so that they will be more useful for public health surveillance. Examples include the redesign of the National Health Interview Survey, the integration of the Department of Health and Human Services' health surveys, the retooling of the vital statistics system, and the movement to subnational data collection.

The pros and cons of developing additional schools and colleges of optometry.

There are no manpower studies to give hard statistics of the number of practitioners needed now and in the future. We will still be increasing the number of optometrists in the country by maintaining the same course we are on now, and show no need for any new optometric schools or colleges. Yet, the present schools and colleges of optometry may need to expand or contract their entering class size as educational reform changes optometric education.

Baccalaureate dental hygiene graduates' perceptions of community dental health employment.

A survey was conducted on 352 University of Iowa baccalaureate dental hygiene graduates to determine the percentage of graduates that had been employed in community dental health, the percentage that were interested in community dental health, employment, and the respondents' perceptions of community dental health employment as it related to the dental hygienist. Specific findings of the study included: 1. Less than 15 percent of the respondents had been employed in community dental health. 2. Nearly 40 percent of the respondents were interested in community dental health employment. 3. Subjects were more opinionated and had more positive impressions of the intrinsic factors than of the extrinsic factors that affect the dental hygienist's employment in community dental health. 4. Subjects who were interested in and/or who had been employed in community dental health had significantly greater positive impressions of community dental health employment than those not interested.

Evaluation of community dental health curricula by baccalaureate dental hygiene graduates.

Three groups of University of Iowa dental hygiene graduates, designed as the Traditional, Transitional, and Experimental Groups, who experienced three types of curricula with increasingly greater emphasis on community dental health were surveyed. The purpose of the study was to determine the correlation between curricular emphasis in community dental health and graduate's perceptions of the adequacy of their educational preparation for public health employment, the percentage employed in public health programs, and their interest in pursuing public health employment in the future. 1. The results of the survey indicated that curricular emphasis was associated with graduates' perceptions of adequacy for public health roles. Specific findings of the study included: a. a greater percentage of the Experimental Group perceived that their education prepared them for state, county, and local public health employment. b. a greater percentage of the Transitional and Experimental Groups perceived and that their education prepared them for employment in elementary and secondary schools. 2. Curricular emphasis did not appear to affect employment patterns of this group of graduates. Public health employment experiences were not significantly different among groups. 3. Interest in future public health employment was affected by curricular emphasis. Findings indicated that a significantly greater percentage of Experimental subjects were interested in future employment positions in state, county, and local public health systems, hospitals, and dental hygiene programs.
