A voluntary open psychotherapy group in a Veterans Drug Dependence Treatment Center was conducted along psychodynamic-integrative lines. Interpretations were first made as with psychiatric patients. These patients regressed to drug use or dropped out. The style was changed to emphasize pertinent general questions. The derivatives of personality problems emerged in the discussions. "Samplers" (patients attending less than five times) and "regulars" (patients attending more than five times) of 104 sessions are compared with one another and the total Center population. Reviewing the literature confirmed our impression that this group treatment was worthwhile.
Group Psychotherapy began in 1905 with Pratt who assembled tuberculosis patients for a class treatment. Application of psychoanalytic concepts to group psychotherapy varied from Pratt's rejection of Freud and psychoanalysis to Louis Wender's descriptive and educational use of psychoanalysis in his group psychotherapy in 1936. At about the same time (1936) Paul Schilder actually interpreted the resistance, transferences, and dreams in his group psychotherapy sessions. Accordingly, Schilder would have to be recognized as the first to conduct a psychoanalytic group psychotherapy. Schilder's many contributions to group psychotherapy appeared in a few papers written before 1941. Precursors of current mainstream group psychotherapy can be found in them and they are still used as references.

The authors used a questionnaire sent to the directors of the 256 approved American psychiatric residency programs to examine the availability, content, and orientations of group therapy training. They found that 78% of the responding programs offered group therapy training, a substantial increase from earlier estimates; that an approach incorporating didactic courses, observation and leadership of groups, supervision, and participation in an experiential group was gaining increased acceptance; that most of the programs provided a variety of arrangements for supervision of group training; that the theoretical orientations mirrored the field of group therapy itself; and, finally, that associated disciplines were gaining increasing acceptance.
