[The stability of complete dentures in the construction of functional movement patterns].

In a cross-sectional study involving 185 full denture wearers, the stability of upper and lower dentures was determined by means of active test movements according to Herbst. The percentages of instable dentures and their confidence intervals were calculated. It was found that all sections of upper full dentures can be regarded as equal with regard to stability, whereas the sections of lower full dentures showed considerable differences. Finally, practice-relevant conclusions are drawn from the results of the present study.

[Roentgenological evaluation of success of nonvital teeth following treatment with dental post and crown].

For the purpose of a comparative study on the occurrence of periapical changes in non-vital teeth after application of pin crowns, the authors examined radiologically 379 teeth, 175 of which had been apicectomized. The groups of teeth with pin crowns was compared with the group of apicectomized teeth with pin crowns and with a control group of 60 teeth which had only had endodontic treatment. The statistical analysis showed that the group of teeth with pin crowns did not differ significantly from the control group in the occurrence of periapical changes. On the contrary, there was a marked increase in periapical changes in the group of apicectomized teeth with pin crowns compared to the two other groups. This difference was statistically significant.

[Topographical changes in the labial fornix in the endentulous mandible due to the insertion of dentures].

The evaluation of 278 lateral teleradiographs obtained from 139 full denture wearers with and without their prostheses permitted to measure the position of the lavial vestibule in the mandible. In contrast to significant sagittal changes in position, no vertical ones were detected after insertion of the denture. Due to these findings, the author is very cautious in assessing the possibility of targeted deepening of the alveololabial sulcus in the region of the labial vestibule by functional impression taking or by shaping the labial border of the denture.

[The dental care for students].

The progression of stomatological morbidity and the extent of the stomatological care of students were re-examined after two years, in a random sample of students previously studied. One third of the students who had been asked by post to come was re-examined; one third of them was not contacted because they had changed their residences and could not be reached by post; and one third did not respond. The high morbidity as well as the present situation of treatment requires an improvement in the stomatological care of the students by the territorial public health services of the town where they go to the university.

[Teleradiodiagnosis for players of brass instruments].

Teleradiodiagnostics as applied to brass instrument players. Specific diagnostic procedures are a great help in the stomatological care of wind instrument players. The authors summarize already confirmed radiological results which had been obtained from examinations of wind instrument players. Further teleradiodiagnostic possibilities are indicated, using lip representations in the cup of mouthpiece, tongue documentations and projections of the rim of mouthpiece on the subjacent structures. Their applicability to this occupational category is discussed.

[Self evaluation and objective dental findings].

In the course of a stomatological study, 354 students were asked for a self-assessment of their dental and oral hygiene and of their dental state. The results obtained were compared with those from an objective evaluation of the dental and oral hygiene and of the dental state of these individuals. Furthermore, the authors made inquiries about oral hygiene habits and knowledge of health, using anonymous questionnaires, 352 of which could be evaluated. Owing to the considerable overestimation of their dental and oral hygiene and of their dental state by the students, there was a great discrepancy from the objective findings, which existed also between the actual knowledge of health and its regular and deliberate application.
