Leadership progression in schools of allied health.

The purpose of this study was to determine the number of future vacancies in the lead administrator positions (i.e., dean or director) in schools and units of allied health academic programs and the potential pool of candidates for the positions. The survey was mailed to the deans or directors of the 100 institutional members of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP). The response rate was 80%. Of the respondents, 58% reported intentions to vacate their positions in the next decade; another 28% reported being unsure of their plans. Retirement was listed as the primary reason (76%). The respondents listed 239 qualified candidates for their positions, or 5.2 candidates per vacancy. The ASAHP's initiatives in leadership development appear to have prepared allied health education for leader succession.

The effects of automated encoders on coding accuracy and coding speed.

Encoded data on diagnoses and procedures are put to a broad range of uses. Coding accuracy and speed are imperative. One method that coding experts have recommended to improve coding accuracy and speed is automated encoders. The article describes the effect of automated encoders on coding accuracy and speed when used by trained coding staff. A study involving six Veterans Administration medical centers found that, overall, coding accuracy improved 19.4 percent after implementation of encoding software. The effect on coding speed, however, depended on the system set-up, with some set-ups actually reducing the number of discharges coded per day.

Reducing your risk of burnout.

Burnout is a common phenomenon of today's workplace. Burnout is attributed to stress in the work environment. Today's health care environment with its rapidly changing requirements is an especially obvious example. Prevention of burnout, then, becomes particularly crucial. Certain personality types are resistant to burnout; unfortunately, other personality types are susceptible to burnout. However, managers and supervisors can use knowledge of personality types and their corresponding strengths and vulnerabilities to protect themselves and their subordinates from burnout. There are also general and type-specific coping efforts that people can use.

The assessment of discomfort in elderly confused patients: a preliminary study.

With the increasing numbers of older adults in our population, nurses are reexamining all aspects of nursing care in order to best meet the needs of these individuals. Normal age changes, the impact of decades of environmental challenges, successful adaptations, acute illnesses, trauma and chronic illnesses combine to create a challenge for accurate and effective assessment of elderly patients. The nurse finds her assessment skills challenged with increasing frequency by the elderly patient who is also acutely confused and experiencing discomfort. The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical utility, validity and reliability of four different approaches to nursing assessment of discomfort with this particularly vulnerable group of elders.

Ethics education: curricular considerations for the allied health disciplines.

Consensus has not been reached on the philosophy, the purpose, and the pedagogy of ethics education. This paper examines elements that should be considered in the curricular design of ethics education. The paper synthesizes the literature on the content, the structure, the faculty, the pedagogical strategies, and the evaluation methods of ethics education. The author recommends a curricular design that incorporates ethical theory, decision making, and practical application through case studies of moral issues in allied health practice. The structure of this course of study is a discrete ethics course with additional ethics modules integrated throughout the professional curriculum.
