Computer aided field editing in the DHS context: the Turkey experiment.

"In this study two types of field editing used during the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey are compared. These two types of editing are computer aided field editing and manual editing. It is known that manual editing by field editors is a tedious job in which errors especially on skip questions can be missed; however, with the aid of computers field editors could quickly find all occasions on which an interviewer incorrectly followed a skip instruction. At the end of the experiment it has been found...that the field editing done with the aid of a notebook computer was consistently better than that done in the standard manual manner." Nuptiality and fertility in the Dominican Republic.

Women in marital unions had more live births than those in consensual unions. The relationship between cumulative fertility and the number of fertile sexual unions is positive for the early childbearing years and negative for the later ones. There is no consistent pattern of relationship between fertility and the sociocultural independent variables for different subgroups according to nuptiality pattern. The relationship between fertility and nuptiality in the Dominican Republic is consistent with that for the Caribbean region.

Sterilization regret in the Dominican Republic: looking for quality-of-care issues.

This report approaches the concept of quality of care by looking at the covariates of sterilization regret in the Dominican Republic according to the results from the 1991 Demographic and Health Survey. The main variables observed are the women's satisfaction with sterilization, their decisionmaking process, sterilization experience, use of family planning, and socioeconomic characteristics. The more detailed measurement and analysis of the outcomes of care point to a need for improvement in the public program effort with regard to sterilization. Substantial proportions of women were sterilized who were younger than 30, who had three or fewer living children, and who had the operation before they had used any other method of contraception. Because a greater proportion of sterilization regret is observed among these groups, women must be enabled to make a free and informed decision about sterilization by means of programs that offer a more balanced choice of methods, as well as better counseling, education, and access to high-quality services.
