Hearing conservation: an industry-school partnership.

An informal observation of hearing test results of employees in hearing conservation programs noted hearing losses among younger workers. As part of a community service project for the Arizona Valle del Sol Association of Occupational Health Nurses, a pilot hearing conservation program was implemented in two junior high schools in Mesa, Arizona. Occupational health nurses conducted sound level measurements in band rooms and industrial technology (shop) classes. Members of the professional association then taught classes of seventh, eighth, and ninth graders about the effects of noise on hearing; how to protect their hearing and use hearing protection; and how to keep their ears clean. Pre- and post-tests were distributed. Sound levels ranged from about 80 to 110 decibels in band rooms and 95-110 decibels in shop rooms. The post-tests revealed increases in knowledge regarding the effects of noise on hearing, ways to determine if noise is damaging to hearing, and safe measures to clean ears. Students also indicated a willingness to wear hearing protection when exposed to noise. The success of this pilot program supports the expansion of a partnership between industry and schools with the goal of hearing conservation.

Medical surveillance program evaluation. Successful program.

1. This program evaluation case example describes changes made to a medical/health surveillance program that resulted in cost savings while increasing services to employees. 2. An integrated computerized recordkeeping system provided immediate feedback to nurse and employee when testing was conducted at distant locations. 3. By offering voluntary health promotion activities simultaneously with a regulatory mandated health/medical surveillance program, employees were able to do "one stop shopping" for programs that had previously been offered separately.

Hearing conservation. Community outreach program for high school students.

1. A community service project for a local constituency of the AAOHN involved teaching hearing conservation classes in junior high school shop classes. 2. Pre-test/post-test comparisons showed that students benefited from the 1 hour class, including indications they planned to use hearing protection devices in the presence of loud noise. 3. Occupational health nurses' expertise in the area of hearing conservation can enhance work-school partnerships that strengthen communities.

Childhood immunizations: an update for occupational health nurses.

1. Nationally, toddlers and preschool children are under-immunized against vaccine preventable diseases. 2. Personal health care providers should comply with the Standards for Pediatric Immunization Practices, and should eliminate all barriers to immunizations. 3. Occupational health nurses are in a position to inform employees of the need to get their children immunized and to teach employees what to expect from private sector health care provider immunization services.
