Interaction of N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-omega-amino carbonic acids, novel amphipathic fatty acid derivatives, with membrane: partition coefficients.

The methods for partition coefficient (Kp) determination were developed for different concentrations of N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-omega-amino carbonic acids, a new class of amphipathic fatty acid derivatives (An), their deutero (AnD) and bromine (AnBr) derivatives. To do this the following methods were used: 2H-NMR, equilibrium dialysis, centrifugation and fluorescence spectroscopy. Kp dependence on the An concentration is discussed. Kp values for AnBr were more than 120-times higher than those for An, the differences between them being smaller than those for the corresponding An. This series of new amphipathic compounds can be used as probes for membrane studies.

Effect of novel aromatic derivative of GABA on lipid peroxidation in chronically morphinized rats.

Effect of novel aromatic GABA derivative (AFA) on lipid peroxidation (LP) was studied in the male rats of the Wistar strain. The morphine-received animals had the higher level of LP in blood plasma, decreased level of total antioxidant activity, the increased rate of LP in the ascorbate-induced system in liver homogenate. In the case of AFA administration with morphine, all the above mentioned effects were almost withdrawn.

N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-omega-amino carbonic acids and their derivatives as tools for biochemical and biophysical investigations.

We propose N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-omega-amino carbonic acids (An) as multifunctional probes for fatty acid metabolism studies. Multifunctionality could be achieved by introduction of different isotopes into An molecule. Deuteration of An results in probes for 2H-NMR membrane studies. Introduction of radioactive iodine and bromine isotopes into An gives diagnosticums for gamma-tomography and PET. AnI and AnBr are fluorescence quenchers usable for membrane studies. This multifunctionality of An derivatives is valuable because they participate in such metabolic pathways of fatty acids as beta-oxidation and inclusion into lipids. They can also inhibit natural FA oxidation.

Helping hospitalized elderly: discharge planning and informal support.

The extent to which informal support systems substitute or provide linkages to formal support systems has been a source of controversy in many studies. Even the extent to which the formal system of discharge planing in acute care hospitals links patients to formal care systems afterwards in unclear and suggests that existing models are ideal and theoretical rather than established empirically. The Posthospital Support Study examined hospital-based discharge planing and services received in the two month period after hospitalization for 170 patients with either heart conditions, or hip problems which required operations. Discharge planners were found to provide for services which were third-party reimbursable. Although planners adhered verbally to a wholistic model of assessing patient need and used an interdisciplinary planning structure, in actual planning they adhered to a narrow medical model while assuming an underlying social model of services from informal supports. The main informal caregivers varied in the extend to which formal as well as other informal providers supplemented their care, with caregiving spouses carrying most of the burden alone. Patients were most likely to assess themselves as either needing services they were already receiving, or those which they or their caregivers had to arrange for themselves.

Psychotropic drug use among institutionalized and noninstitutionalized Medicaid aged in California.

Previous research has shown that prescription drug use is higher for the aged than for the general population. The present study uses the California Medicaid data base to compare the amount and pattern of prescription drug use among the aged to that of the general population and then compares, within the aged population, drug use by the institutionalized and noninstitutionalized. It was found that prescription drug use was higher for the aged as compared to the general population; among the aged, however, prescription drug expenditures were almost three times as high for the institutionalized as compared to the noninstitutionalized. The bulk of the difference in prescription drug expenditure among the aged subgroup was found to be due to a much higher level of psychotropic drug use among the institutionalized. Data from a sample of aged in a day health program raises questions about the appropriateness of this level of psychotropic drug use.

Classical conditioning of decreases in human systolic blood pressure.

Decrease in human systolic blood pressure of 4.35 mm Hg (range: 0 to 12 mm Hg) were classically conditioned in normal and hypertensive subjects using a delayed conditioning paradigm in which a 30-sec auditory stimulus (the conditioned stimulus) was followed immediately by tilting the subject 15degrees head-down to elicit small decreases in blood pressure. Conditioning occurred within five trials. A control group demonstrated that sensitization of the reflex by repeated tilting could not account for the blood-pressure decreases associated with the conditioned stimulus in experimental subjects.
