Infectious arthritis.

Septic arthritis results from invasion of the synovium by microorganisms, and most infectious organisms can cause arthritis. In children, septic arthritis is usually associated with systemic infections such as pneumonia or meningitis; in young adults, gonococcal arthritis is the most common cause; and in the aged, septic arthritis is usually superimposed on chronic joint disease. Underlying rheumatoid arthritis is common, and Dr. Knights stresses the importance of recognizing septic arthritis as a complication of rheumatoid arthritis.

Uncommon presentations of venous disease.

Venous disease can manifest itself in unusual ways; three uncommon venous disease states are described, together with discussions of their treatment. The cases include an iliac compression syndrome, incipient venous gangrene of an upper limb associated with polycythemia and congestive cardiac failure, and venous edema of a lower limb as a sequel to previous radical pelvic surgery.

Eosinophilic granulomas of the gastrointestinal tract.

Three patients with eosinophilic infiltration of the stomach and one with eosinophilic granulomatous polyp of the ileum are described. We believe that eosinophilic granulomatous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract comprise a distinct clinical and pathologic entity which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of obstructing or ulcerating lesions.

Kaposi's sarcoma.

Recognition of Kaposi's sarcoma and its prevalence in the lower extremities is reviewed in light of a recent association with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
