Intrabony neurilemmoma: diagnosis and management.

The authors present a case of a mandibular neurilemmoma discovered on routine radiographic examination of an asymptomatic young woman. The lesion was surgically removed and there was no radiographic evidence of recurrence. A review of the literature is presented and the differential diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of this benign neurogenic tumor are discussed.

Odontogenic tumors that mimic a dentigerous cyst.

Hyperplastic follicular tissue and a dentigerous cyst are the two most common entities associated with the crown of an impacted tooth. However, other diagnostic possibilities, including odontogenic tumors should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pericoronal radiolucency. This article presents three cases of radiolucent lesions that were histologically diagnosed as an odontogenic tumor, and stresses the importance of histological evaluation of all pericoronal radiolucencies.

Cystic pleomorphic adenoma of the mandible.

A cystic pleomorphic adenoma of the posterior mandibular alveolar ridge of a 73-year-old white man is reported. This tumor presented considerable diagnostic problems which may have consequences in treatment in similar cases.

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle mimicking TMJ syndrome: clinical and therapeutic appraisal of a case.

This paper describes a patient in whom a huge osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle was mistakenly treated as temporomandibular joint syndrome for approximately 6 months before an accurate diagnosis was made. While clinical and pathologic features of this lesion are discussed, further emphasis is placed on the surgical management and immediate reconstruction with autogenous costochondral grafting.

Mucoepidermoid odontogenic cyst.

This unusual cystic lesion was previously described as a lesion that has features of both botryoid odontogenic cyst and mucoepidermoid tumor and later was named as glandular odontogenic cyst. An additional case is reported and its clinicopathologic features described. The name "mucoepidermoid odontogenic cyst" is proposed.

Oral manifestations of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: report of case.

First described in the beginning of this century, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a hereditary connective tissue disorder. This case report describes an 11-year-old girl who had frequent unexplainable bruises. During an initial orthodontic evaluation, characteristic symptoms were spotted, and a subsequent diagnosis made.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is one of the most common malignancies of the mesenchymal tissue in the head and neck region. A case of a 26-year-old male with oral rhabdomyosarcoma is presented. The clinical and pathologic aspects of this malignancy are also reviewed. Furthermore, the histopathologic and ultrastructural features of this neoplasia are described and the important role of electron microscopy in diagnosis of the myogenic tumor is emphasized. Finally, different modes of treatment for the rhabdomyosarcoma are discussed.

Connective tissue reactions to 3% tetracycline ointment in rat skin.

The connective tissue reactions to 3% tetracycline ointment were studied in 14 Sprague-Dawley white male rats. Using polyethylene tubes, the ointment was implanted subcutaneously in the pouches surgically created on the backs of the experimental group. Empty tube implants, tubes with the vehicle (vaseline/lanolin), and a sham operation (surgical pouches with no implant) served as controls. The animals were killed on day 14 and tissue blocks were taken containing the tubes and a generous amount of the peripheral connective tissue. The connective tissue surrounding the tube opening furthest from the surgical incision was histologically examined for the severity of tissue reaction (STR), the number of inflammatory cell infiltrates (II), and the spread of the reaction area (RSI). The data were statistically analyzed. The sham operation group showed minimal inflammatory response. All three parameters (STR, II, RSI) were significantly greater in the tetracycline group when compared with the empty tube group at 0.05 level of significance. There were significant differences between the mean values of the STR and RSI scores in the tetracycline and vehicle groups (groups 1 and 2). The vehicle group (group 2) had significantly higher STR and II values than the empty tube group (group 3); however, the RSI scores were not statistically different. Necrosis was observed in the reaction site in group 1 and vacuole-containing macrophages were noted in groups 1 and 2. This study, although an animal investigation, questions the use of topical 3% tetracycline ointment on sutured surgical flaps.

Histologic analysis of the hyperplastic maxillary anterior frenum.

Fifteen biopsy specimens from hyperplastic maxillary anterior freni were examined histologically by three investigators, and tissue components were subjectively rated on a predesigned scoring sheet. The presence of calcification and ossification associated with high levels of inflammatory infiltrates and reactive connective tissue confirm the fact that surgical excision of the hyperplastic frenum is warranted.
