We describe the results of experiments carried out in the arteries of dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and humans, normal or atheromatous, calcified, or not, with the application of the argon and CO2 laser, in vitro or in vivo, directly or indirectly. Similarly, we present the results of laser effects when radiation is delivered through a special catheter with the purpose of producing aortic insufficiency, opening pulmonary valvular stenosis, desobstructing carotid and coronary obstruction induced in dogs as well as atheromatous obstructions in human amputated legs. Arterial wall perforation was present in 50% of all cases. We suggest four options in order to diminish this adverse result: (1) the use of coherent optical bundles which will allow the proper guiding of the laser beam, (2) the construction of a special catheter for proper handling of the laser-carrying fiber, (3) a combination of optical and computer programs which will aid to identify calcified regions, and (4) the use of dyes which will be strongly and selectively absorbed by the atheromas and which will thus allow their destruction at low laser powers.

A rapid, simple, and sensitive method has been developed for the identification and quantitation of strychnine in human blood. The sample cleanup procedure involved solid-phase extraction with Oasis(R) HLB cartridges. The extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography-electron impact ionization-mass spectrometry. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) were 0.03 and 0.10 microg/mL, respectively, and the method was found to be linear between the LOQ and 2.5 microg/mL, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9994. Intra- and interday precision and accuracy were determined at both low and high concentrations (0.50 and 2.00 microg/mL). The CVs ranged from 5.63 to 8.50% and bias was within +/- 10% of the true value. Mean recovery of strychnine was 90.7%. Because of its simplicity and speed, the described method can be applied in forensic toxicology laboratories to determine this alkaloid in whole blood samples. Also, the fact that only 0.5 mL of blood is required to accomplish the analysis make this procedure useful in situations where several exams are needed and the sample volume is limited.
The authors present the results of the psychosocial outcomes of 45 patients undergoing excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). The patients were evaluated by means of self-report questionnaires preoperatively and 6 months after surgery to determine the effect of uncorrected vision change on the patients quality of life. The measurements include the following variables: clinical end points (spherical equivalent refraction); visual function (night driving, day driving, near vision, far vision, glare disability); functional status (physical, social, and role functioning, mental status); general well-being (health perceptions, personal well-being, overall quality of life); and satisfaction with surgery (expectations, satisfaction with medical staff, postoperative pain, satisfaction with treatment outcomes). Preliminary results indicate that changes of uncorrected vision after PRK are reflected by improvement in each of the quality-of-life functions.

With the objective of studying the natural defense mechanisms against traumatic hemorrhages, 20 mice were studies. Some of the large vessels were examined histologically after fixing with formaldehyde, in cases of bleeding, bleeding + hemodilution and controls. In the hemo-diluted group, important alterations in the distribution of the components of the blood stream were confirmed and in one case, there was extravasation of liquid poor in cellular elements. The results show that hemodilution is an unfavorable condition for the natural defense mechanisms against hemorrhage. The repercussion of these experimental results on clinical cases of traumatic hemorrhage is speculated.
