[Mucocele of the submaxillary salivary gland].

Paper reporting a rare case of mucocele of the right submaxillary gland in a youngster, 14 year-old. Perusal of the concerning literature and analysis of its etiopathological theories, the differential diagnosis and comments on diagnostic and therapeutic data as well.

[Tonsillar hamartoma].

Reporting the case of a young woman, 25, with long lasting dysphagia. At examination a pediculated polypoid formation in the lower pole of the left amygdala is verified (3 x 2 cms). After removal, under local anesthesia, is diagnosed as an hamartomatous tonsillar polyp. Review of the literature, analysis of several etiopathogenical theories and differential diagnosis with other resembling amygdaline conditions.

[The mucociliary function and the morphology of the nasal mucous membrane in laryngectomees compared with normal subjects].

The laryngectomees offer a good model for investigating the effect of absence of nasal ventilation in humans. Two samples has been studied: one composed for 24 laryngectomees, the other one for 54 healthy men. The clearance mucociliar time, using the charcoal power method in both specimen, and a structural and ultrastructural morphological survey in 5 cases, before and after the laryngectomy, was carried out. Normal people have a mucociliar clearance mean time of 9.3 +/- 3.6 minutes and among laryngectomized this time is 11.1 +/- 5.5 minutes, with no statistically significative differences at all (p = 0.26). Morphological outcome of the inquiry shows by the 2nd week there is a marked change in the previously transitional epithel which becomes a good ciliated epithelial one, together with an increase in number of goblet cells, and the exhibition of great dynamism in the morphological changes happening in the nasal mucous membrane, in agreement with the stop of the nose ventilation.

Sudden deafness and cerebellar tumour.

We report the case of a female patient who presented with sudden deafness as the first symptom of a cerebellar tumour which was not localized strictly in the cerebellopontine angle and did not show direct compression on the extrabulbar portion of the VIIIth cranial nerve. The clinical picture contained a number of signs and symptoms typical of cerebellar involvement. Surgical intervention restored the hearing and caused the symptoms to disappear. We also review the association between tumours and sudden deafness in the literature.

[Adenoidectomy and nasal mucociliary transport].

The paper deals with the research done by the AA. on the nasal mucociliary transport-time in a group of 30 children between 3 and 13-year-old. They employ the charcoal dust test. The powder is laid inside of the nose the day prior to the removal of the adenoids and investigated in the nasopharynx two weeks later. The conclusion drawn out is that among these children the mucociliary nasal transport time is retarded when compared with other children, turning over to the normality two weeks later.

[Malherbe's calcifying epithelioma (pilomatrixoma) of the cervical middle line. A case report].

Calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe (Pilomatrixoma) is a rare benign tumor, starting in the hair matrix and clinically resembling a hard subcutaneous swelling. The most common sites of localization are the head and neck regions. Women show a sizeable incidence. We report a case located in the prelaryngeal area and emphasize cytodiagnostic by fine needle aspiration. The correct treatment consists in pure and simply surgical excision under local anesthesia.

[Nasal mucociliary transport in normal subjects].

Clinical study referred to the nasal mucociliary transport of 132 healthy people, by means of the charcoal powder method. Intranasal clearance direction of the marker, the degree of the test's reproductiveness and the influence on the clearance of certain variables are considered. With this procedure the study of the nasociliary transportation time become simple, cheap, reliable, reproducible and objective. There are great individual variations of the nasal transport-time, but it is relatively constant in each examinee. The number of slow markers is scarce. The age, the sex, tobacco and the feminine cycle have no influential effect in the nasal mucociliary transport-time.

[Pharyngeal lipoma].

We present a 40-year-old male patient with a lump in the parapharyngeal space protruding in the oro- and hypopharynx and obstructing the airway. Diagnosis lipoma. The pathology is reviewed and the surgical approach is commented upon.

[Chondroid syringoma in the parotid region. Report of a case].

This is a case of a right cervical lump in a 19 years old woman, diagnosed of chondroid Syringoma, by means of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, and surgically treated. The AA. analyze clinical, histological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the theme and make a review of the present-day literature.

Adenoma, Sweat Gland↗

[Pharyngostoma following total laryngectomy].

Prospective study following 32 total laryngectomees with the aim of compare the efficacy of the pharyngo-esophageal closure alternatively stiching with vicryl and catgut. The use of vicryl resulted in 31 percent pharyngocutaneous fistulae versus 61 percent with catgut.

Carcinoma, Squamous Cell↗

[A classic case of Ludwig's angina].

The AA. have the chance to review the etiology, the clinic and the management of this risky process, through a characteristic Ludwig's angina of their own practice. A middle age man carrying an odontogenic inflammation developed a spreading infection into the deep neck tissues. The problem was successfully resolved with antibiotherapy and surgical drainage.

[Treatment of sudden deafness: our experience].

The sudden deafness is a common pathology with unilateral affectation and unknown etiology. Nowadays, the treatment is not completely clarified. We compare a urografin-CO2 treatment with CO2 as a single therapy.

[Experience with cancer of the cavum in Murcia].

A retrospective study was made of cavum malignant neoplasias. They were diagnosed and treated in the Ciudad Sanitaria Virgen de la Arrixaca (Murcia-Spain), between 1973 and 1982, with an epidemiological, clinical, anatomopathological, treatment and prognosis analysis. Cavum cancer is more common in men, with an average evolution time before the diagnosis about 4, 8 months, and an overall survival rate following treatment for every anatomopathological type about 32.4% after five years.

[Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. A comparative study of microscopic and endoscopic techniques].

A comparative study was made of endonasal dacryorhinostomy using either a 0 degree or 30 degrees rigid endoscope or a Zeiss operating microscope in 25 patients with chronic epiphora and complete stenosis of the nasolacrimal duct confirmed by dacryocystography. The success rate in both groups was similar (80%). Computed tomography is useful in post-traumatic cases.
