Participation in social activities: maternal ratings of maltreated and nonmaltreated children.

Using the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (T. M. Achenbach, 1991), 192 mothers of maltreated children and 179 mothers of nonmaltreated children rated children's participation in social activities. Maltreated children were reported as belonging to fewer organizations and were judged less proficient at sports than nonmaltreated children. Regarding specific types of activities, maltreated children were rated as less likely to take part in team sports and to belong to sports organizations. Psychosocial disadvantage may reduce opportunities for maltreated children to participate in social activities.

Behavioral and emotional functioning in children of adolescent mothers.

This study compared children of mothers in three age groups--15-17, 18-19, and 20-24 years--at the birth of their first child. Outcome measures were ratings of psychological functioning obtained at three time periods from multiple sources. Results, controlling for family structure and maternal education, indicate that children of adolescent mothers were generally not different from children of mothers in their early twenties with respect to behavioral and emotional functioning. Maternal education had a far greater effect on the outcome measures than did maternal age.

Teenage parenting and child abuse: are they related?

The relationship between teenage parenting and child abuse is examined in terms of three methodological problems that must be considered in assessing this relationship. Four data sets illustrative of the methodological difficulties are described. Results suggest that the hypothesized association between teenage pregnancy and child abuse may be confounded by the association of each variable with social class.

Emotional development in physically abused children.

Thirty physically abused children between five and 12 years old were compared to a matched group of 30 nonabused children on psychological tests measuring self-concept, aggression, socialization with peers, establishment of trust, and separation from the mother. Differences between groups were found in each of the areas of emotional development studied.

Services for maltreated children: variations by maltreatment characteristics.

Mental health services were the most frequently recommended service for maltreated children known to a child protective service agency, but more than one-fourth of the children with serious behavioral problems did not receive referrals for such services. Children with long histories of maltreatment were more likely to be referred for some services, especially out-of-home care. Gaps in services remain, underscoring a need for research focused on the need for interventions targeted to maltreated children involved with child protective service agencies.
