Temporal criterion for behavior: orientation of the young Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus.

When considering a behavioral pattern as a specific type of mechanism, an inherent problem is that it is difficult to determine to what extent the mechanism is programmed to behave selectively in individual situations. To probe this question further, we investigated the orientation of the body axis of the young Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The pattern of the substrate and the orientation of neighboring fish were recognized as the determining factors for orientation in P. olivaceus. It was expected, therefore, that a group of individuals would exhibit a definite orientation pattern with respect to the striped pattern. However, the global orientation patterns on the striped substrate based on ten individuals could be classified into two categories: perpendicular and cross to the stripe pattern. This suggests that the substrate pattern and the surrounding individuals operated as distinct temporal criteria as stimuli for orientation. Analysis based on the local and global viewpoints reveals the temporality quantitatively.

Learning process by goldfish and its use of a local site as a map.

The issue we address is whether an animal knows or understands the significance of learning. We constructed an animal's own conceptualization via resolving a paradox underlying the process of learning. We found a kind of self-similar pattern in the behavior of goldfish resolving a paradoxical experimental problem. The pattern can be considered as a solution to the paradox in the experiment. An animal's own learning should be revised through solving paradoxes. The dualism of mechanistic thinking and vitalism can thus be avoided.

Ligand-exchange ion chromatographic determination of malic acid enantiomers in apple juice with photometric detection.

An ion chromatographic separation with photometric detection using a chiral copper(II) complex as the eluent has been developed for the resolution of enantiomers of malic acid in commercially available apple juices. The results obtained by this method were in good agreement with those by an enzymatic method with separation by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction due to dialysis amyloidosis.

Marked gastric dilatation and the carpal tunnel syndrome developed concurrently in a 58-year-old man treated with hemodialysis for 14 years. Despite extensive examinations, no attributable organic lesion was demonstrated in the gastrointestinal tract. However, amyloid deposition, which was immunohistochemically identified as beta-2 microglobulin, was demonstrated in the stomach and the synovia excised from the right carpal tunnel. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction due to dialysis amyloidosis was considered to be the cause of the gastric dilatation. There have been a few recently reported cases with dialysis amyloidosis in which extra-articular amyloid deposition resulted in overt clinical problems. The present case provides additional evidence that dialysis amyloidosis can develop serious extra-articular complications; intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a very rare gastrointestinal manifestation.

Theoretical consideration on polarized photometric detection.

Previously, we developed a novel detector, a polarized photometric detector for optically active compounds, where two polarizers are set on either side of the UV-visible absorbance detector flow cell. In this paper, we present theoretical considerations on this method with several equations. If the inclined angle of the second polarizer is defined as alpha (left when alpha > 0 degree), the following equation is obtained: delta Abs = 2 log e.tan alpha.beta, where delta Abs is the change in absorbance and beta (magnitude of beta << alpha) is the angle of rotation of light passing through the cell containing the optically active compound. This equation suggests that delta Abs is proportional to the analyte concentration and that the dextro- and laevorotatory compounds are detected as positive and negative absorbance changes, respectively. The theoretical maximum signal to noise (S/N) ratio is obtained when alpha = 45 degrees (= 0.8 rad) and the smallest detection limit is 5 x 10(-5) degrees (S/N = 3) when the path length of the flow cell is 10 mm. This detector was successfully used in flow injection analysis (FIA) as well as HPLC for optically active compounds.
