Serum lipid and lipoprotein-cholesterol values in cord blood and on the sixth postnatal day in newborns of varying maturity.

Triglyceride, total cholesterol, phospholipid, HDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were studied in 22 eutrophic, 16 true premature and 22 small-for-gestational age neonates in cord blood and on the 6th postnatal day. According to the findings the lipid-lipoprotein metabolism was influenced primarily by gestational age. Parallel with increasing gestational age, phospholipid and triglyceride concentrations rose whereas cholesterol values decreased. Postnatal changes of lipid-lipoprotein metabolism developed more slowly in premature than in mature newborns. The effects of intrauterine malnutrition manifested themselves mainly in differences of the triglyceride and phospholipid levels.

Effect of antibiotics on the results and complications or thoracic operations. Par II.

The role of antibiotics in the therapeutical result and in the postoperative complications was studied after 557 thoracic operations. It was found that antibiotics have no decisive role in the therapeutic result and there was no difference in the incidence of wound infections between the groups treated with different antibiotics. The principles and practice of treatment of would infections and pyothorax are discussed in detail. No relationship was found between the incidence of postoperative respiratory complications and the various drug treatments. Prevention and treatment of postoperative respiratory complications are discussed. The length of the febrile period was independent of the antibiotics applied. Their time of application, the problem of changing drugs and their side-effects after thoracic operations are analyzed.

Spinal bupivacain anaesthesia in traumatological surgery.

Two-hundred forty spinal cases of bupivacain anaesthesia are reported. One third of the patients was over 60 years of age and one quarter in a poor condition. No serious or lasting complications were observed. In the overwhelming majority anaesthesia during operation was satisfactory, thus the drug was found suitable for use in traumatological surgery. Due to its protracted effect, bupivacain ensures analgesia in the early postoperative period.
