A comparison between area and volume measurements of the mastoid air spaces in normal temporal bones.

In a study of 26 normal cadaveric temporal bones, a significant correlation was found between the area of the mastoid air spaces assessed from a conventional lateral radiograph and the mastoid volume as determined using high resolution computed tomography. The relationship, which was found to be linear, is of the form V = 0.82 A + 0.13. The correlation coefficient is 0.95 with a residual standard deviation about the regression of 1.14 cm3. It is apparent, therefore, that an accurate assessment of the mastoid air space volume can be obtained by means of a simple and routinely requested investigation, i.e. the 35 degree lateral oblique radiograph.

Inter-sterno-costo-clavicular ossification.

The clinical and radiological features of four patients with inter-sterno-costo-clavicular ossification are described. The process was associated with established seronegative spondyloarthropathy in three cases of whom four had long standing psoriasis, the other having ankylosing spondylitis. In the fourth case no associated arthropathy was present. A review of the literature is presented.

The importance of appropriate frequency selection in sonographic gallstone detection.

A prospective study was performed on 161 patients referred for gallbladder ultrasound to determine whether routine use of a 5 MHz probe in addition to a standard 3.5 MHz probe provided useful additional information. Seventy-two patients were found to have gallstones. In 26.4% of these patients (19 cases) a confident diagnosis of gallstones was possible only when the 5 MHz probe was used. These results confirm theoretical assertions on the value of high-frequency probes in the evaluation of superficially located organs such as the gallbladder. Our findings lend support to their routine use in cholecystosonography.
