Effect of electrostatic interaction on phase separation behaviour of chitin crystallite suspensions.

Optical and electron microscopy were used to observe the dynamics of the phase separation in aqueous chitin suspensions prepared by HCl hydrolysis of crab chitin. Freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy reveals that chitin crystallites are partially aggregated in the suspension and have an average length of 200 nm and an average width of 8 nm. They exhibit a positive surface charge of approximately 0.5 e/nm2 when fully protonated. The liquid crystal-forming aqueous suspensions of such crystallites are investigated through phase diagrams and Zeta potential measurements for different ionic strength. Exposure of the suspension to a low concentration of univalent electrolyte has a negligible effect on phase separation because of the contribution of the charged crystallites themselves to the ionic strength. The thickness of the effective repulsive layer is estimated both from the phase diagrams according to Onsager's theory and from the computed interaction energy derived from the Poisson-Boltzmann equation using the experimental Zeta potential as surface potential. When the contribution of crystallites to the ionic strength is taken into account and an hypothetical linear charge density close to the Manning limit is assumed, there is good agreement with the Debye length.

[Contemporary biopsy for diagnosis of abortion residues: preliminary experience].

The differential diagnosis between abortion and ectopic pregnancy has important clinical implications. In this report we have tested the accuracy of frozen sections in uterine curettings to identify intrauterine pregnancy. Uterine curettings with a diagnosis of products of gestation, from 104 patients were studied. In all of them plasmatic levels of B Gonadotrophin were measured. The curetting material was fixed and studied on frozen sections and on paraffin embedded tissue. A high positive relationship between frozen and embedded material was observed. The sensibility, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of the frozen section to detect chorionic villi were 90.6; 100; 100 and 74% for each of them.

A phase of liposomes with entangled tubular vesicles.

An equilibrium phase belonging to the family of bilayer liposomes in ternary mixtures of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC), water, and geraniol (a biological alcohol derived from oil-soluble vitamins that acts as a cosurfactant) has been identified. Electron and optical microscopy reveal the phase, labeled Ltv, to be composed of highly entangled tubular vesicles. In situ x-ray diffraction confirms that the tubule walls are multilamellar with the lipids in the chain-melted state. Macroscopic observations show that the Ltv phase coexists with the well-known L4 phase of spherical vesicles and a bulk L alpha phase. However, the defining characteristic of the Ltv phase is the Weissenberg rod climbing effect under shear, which results from its polymer-like entangled microstructure.

[Laparoscopic surgery. Preliminary experience].

The first 23 cases of surgical laparoscopy carried out in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Valdivia Hospital are presented. The advantages of this surgical technique and its indication, in anexal pathology, specially in young women who wish to preserve their fertility is emphasized.

[Behavior of flow waves of the uterine and external iliac arteries during labor contractions].

To evaluate the changes of blood flow velocities of the uterine and external iliac arteries, we studied a total of 15 normal full term pregnant, which were in the active phase of labor. The mean maternal age was 21.6 +/- 5.2 years (X +/- SD), the mean parity was 0.6 +/- 0.5, and the mean gestational age was 39.2 +/- 1.1 weeks. All patients had normal deliveries, the newborn weight was 3440 +/- 621 g, and the apgar score was 8.6 +/- 1.6 and 9.0 +/- 0.7 at 1 and 5 min, respectively. In the uterine artery, the systolic/diastolic ratio and the resistance index increased significantly from 1.83 +/- 0.25 to 4.24 +/- 1.55 (p < 0.05) and from 0.46 +/- 0.05 to 0.74 +/- 0.08 (p < 0.01), respectively from the relaxation phase to the contraction phase. In all 15 patients the external iliac artery showed a reverse diastolic flow during uterine relaxation, whereas only 2 of the 14 patients showed this reverse flow during uterine contraction (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the flow velocity was modified with maternal hyperventilation. Finally, we conclude that uterine contraction induced profound changes in the blood flow velocities in the uterine and external iliac arteries. We proposed that these changes could be explained by uterine muscular contractions causing the blood flow to be shunted to areas of less resistance.
