Vertebral hydatid disease.

Hydatid disease affecting the bones is a rare condition, its incidence ranging from 0.5-2% of all cases of hydatidosis. The bones most often involved are the vertebrae (44%). A 22-year-old man presented to the hospital with low back pain. A CT scan revealed intracanal and paravertebral cystic lesions at the level of L5-S1 with destruction of the corpus and lamina, and sacral foramen invasion. An operation was performed and histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis. In countries where hydatidosis is endemic, the possibility of the disease must be borne in mind.

A case of bladder agenesis.

Agenesis of the bladder is a rare anomaly, and it is usually associated with the absence of the urethra. In the case report herein, a normal urethra was found with ureters emptying into the posterior urethra. The right kidney was non-functioning and small.

Intrathoracic extramedullary haemopoiesis.

Intrathoracic extramedullary haemopoiesis is a rare condition accompanying chronic haematologic diseases. A 25 year old male beta-thalassaemia intermedia patient with bilateral posterior mediastinal masses is reported. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging provide detailed information for evaluation of thalassaemia and similar haemolytic diseases. In geographic areas where thalassaemia is prevalent, to avoid unnecessary surgical interventions, extramedullary haemopoiesis should be considered in differential diagnosis of patients who have chronic anaemia with asymptomatic intrathoracic tumours.

Hallervorden-Spatz disease.

In a 22 year old man with dominant extrapyramidal signs, dystonia and mental deterioration, magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked overall low signal from the globus pallidus on each side, with central zones of high signal on T2-weighted spin echo sequences. There was also a strikingly low signal in the zona reticularis of the substantia nigra, consistent with Hallervorden-Spatz disease.

Surgical treatment of giant hydatid cyst of the left ventricle and diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging.

Cardiac echinococcosis has not been reported frequently. Because of the risk of potentially lethal complications, early diagnosis and definitive treatment are very important. The case of a 41-year-old physician, in whom diagnosis of giant left ventricular hydatid cyst was established with cross-sectional echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging, is presented. The cyst was removed surgically and mitral valve replacement performed because of destruction of the valve.

The computed tomographic evaluation of patellofemoral joint in patellar fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation.

In this study, we examined 97 patella fractures in which open reduction and internal fixation had been performed at the 1st Orthopaedics and Trauma Clinic of Social Security Ankara Hospital between January 1983 and December 1988. After 24 to 96 months, on an average of 48.4 months follow-up period, the cases were evaluated clinically for knee function complaints and by CT and roentgenography for patellofemoral articulation. In 11 of the patients (11.5) there was patellar displacement, 2 of the patients had patellar tilt (2.1%) and in 14 patients (14.5%) there was malalignment in which 1 patient (1.1%) had both patellar tilt and displacement. This data was obtained by measuring femoral trochlear angle (FTA) and patellar tilt angle (PTA) by CT at various degrees of knee flexion. Thirty-three patients (34%) had slight and 19 patients (19.6%) had severe degenerative changes in the patellofemoral articulation. It is found that there is close relation between the variability of the pain complaints of the patients and the type of the fracture and the time of management and the postoperative rehabilitation.
