[Our experience with the sentinel lymph node detection].

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node staging is the most powerful predictor of survival in breast cancer women. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is more accurate method in evaluation of axillary lymph node staging than complete axillary lymph node dissection (CALND) because of more precious histological and imunohistochemical assessment of the first draining lymph nodes. Furthermore, SLNB eliminates complications resulting from CALND. MATERIAL AND METHODS: SLNB is either performed using blue dye technique or using of combination of blue dye and radioguided technique. We prefer two days protocol in application of Tc 99 radiocolloid. There were used both techniques for detection sentinel lymph nodes and results were compared. RESULTS: There were performed 21 SLNBs using blue dye technique, Group A, and 20 SLNBs using combination of blue dye and radioguided technique, Group B, from October 2001 to November 2003. Sentinel lymph nodes were not detected in Group A in two cases, false negativity occurred two times in this group. Sentinel lymph nodes were detected in all cases in Group B and there was no false negativity present in this group. CONCLUSION: Combination of blue dye and radioguided technique is more precious in detection of sentinel lymph node than blue dye technique itself. Two days protocol of application of Tc 99 radiocolloid enables performing this method even in hospitals, where the Department of Nuclear Medicine is not available.

Improvement of the basidiomycete Coprinus sp.

Coprinus sp. C-1 (obtained from uranium mines) was subjected to improvement procedures with the aim of preparing a strain that could degrade cellulose in the straw substrate more rapidly and effectively. The original C-1 strain was highly resistant to UV and X radiation but it was rather sensitive to tris(2-chloroethyl)amine, the effect of which increased when applying simultaneously compounds reacting with mercapto groups of some enzymes. The mutants obtained synthesized during the same interval by up to 94% more N compounds than the original strain the rate of cellulose degradation increasing by about 40%. In certain mutants the content of some essential amino acids simultaneously increased by up to 110%.

Responsiveness to stimulation during paradoxical sleep in infants.

11 healthy children were repeatedly studied during 2 sleep cycles in 2 sessions at 2,6, 12 and 20 wk of life. Three acoustic stimuli, light and tactile stimulus were applied in a randomized order in intervals ranging randomly from 30 to 120 sec. Continuous polygraphic recordings were made of respiration, REMs, EEG and EMG of biceps and triceps brachii. The effect of stimuli on the length of paradoxical sleep, REMs and EMG was assessed. There were age-related changes in the number of REMs after stimuli. At 2 and 6 wk no stimulus elicited any change. At 12 wk the children responded with an increased number of rapid eye movements to acoustic stimuli, at 20 wk they responded to acoustic stimuli and light. The conclusion is that, as far as REMs are concerned, responsiveness during paradoxical sleep changes with age. There was a difference in the incidence of EOG responses and EMG responses. These findings show that it is not possible to assess responsiveness in infants during PS by one measure only.
