WHO collaborative study on the sero-epidemiology of rubella in Caribbean and Middle and South American populations in 1968.

Knowledge of the rubella antibody profiles of female populations of various ages and in various geographical areas is essential for an intelligent and effective administration of rubella vaccine. The investigation reported was undertaken to extend a previous WHO collaborative study to include additional areas of the Americas. As in the other mainland areas included in the earlier study, the presence of rubella haemagglutination-inhibiting antibody was found to be a likely event in over 80% of the females of child-bearing age in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, urban Peru (Lima) and Uruguay. Antibody rates were significantly lower in Jamaica, Panama, rural Peru and Trinidad. These data confirm and extend earlier findings of low levels of rubella immunity in certain island or isolated populations.

Moyamoya and other causes of stroke in patients with Down syndrome.

Twenty-seven new cases of stroke in Down syndrome are reported, two probands, 13 patients from review of institutional records, and 12 patients from a survey of child neurologists. Forty-one patients from previous reports are summarized. Most stroke episodes were related to congenital heart disease and infections. Seven cases were associated with angiographic abnormalities; there were three cases of unknown etiology and four cases of moyamoya. The understanding of moyamoya and other causes of stroke may be advanced by further study of stroke in Down syndrome patients.

Hemodialysis teaching protocols: an educational tool for both patients and nurses.

The goal of our dynamic progressive care unit patient education program was to empower hemodialysis patients to learn to be as independent in their hemodialysis treatments as their condition permitted, whether in the home or in the clinical setting. The paradigm shift that has placed patient education at the centre of health care has necessitated a practice change for both patients and nurses. In response to this change and to assist us to achieve our goal, a set of 14 hemodialysis teaching protocols has been developed. Individual protocols address specific aspects of the management of hemodialysis treatments and implementation, and are based upon the nursing process. Each protocol has an accompanying documentation and evaluation tool and can be used as an indicator for continuous quality improvement. Our success to date is evident in the placement of patients along the continuum of limited self-care starting in the progressive care unit and continuing to achieve increased independence by dialyzing in their own homes as part of the home hemodialysis program.
