For the last 13 years, 47 patients with ALL over 15 years old (range 15-72; median 21) entered a 'total-therapy' programme. All cases received a 6-8 week induction course of PRD, VCR, DRB and/or L-ASN. Prophylaxis of CNS was done by cranial radiotherapy plus i.t. MTX in 32/45 patients who attained complete remission (CR). After CR, subsequent therapy involved a programme of maintenance with 6MP and MTX at full doses. Pulses of intermittent reinforcement (PRD, VCR and DRB) were done for 2 weeks, every 3 months, for at least 3 years. CR was achieved in 42/47 patients (89.3%). The median relapse-free survival of the patients who attained CR was 57 months, with an 8-year estimated disease-free survival rate of 43% for those cases. If actuarial assumptions were to be sustained, it would indicate an encouraging cure rate of 38% of all our adult ALL patients (mainly in those cases between 15 and 30 years old).

Unlike normal human cells, cultured fibroblasts from patients with argininosuccinic aciduria cannot synthesize arginine from citrulline because they have a deficiency of argininosuccinic acid lyase (ASL). We have found that V79, a Chinese hamster cell line, cannot grow on citrulline. Although these cells show a normal uptake of citrulline and have levels of ASL comparable to a human cell line (HeLa) which can grow in citrulline-containing medium, V79 cells have less than 5% of the argininosuccinic acid synthetase (ASS) activity of HeLa and cannot convert citrulline to argininosuccinate and thence to arginine. When heterokaryocytes are formed between V79 and a human cell line derived from a patient with ASL deficiency, complementation takes place and citrulline is incorporated into cell protein, presumably after having been converted to arginine. This is the first time that a genetic defect of the urea cycle has been corrected in human cells.
The diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis has always been controversial. During many years, the laboratory diagnosis of this syndrome was based on the criteria of Amsel et al (1983). This includes many factors, such us aqueous vaginal discharge, positive KOH test and the presence of clue-cells in a wet mount or Gram stain. Lately, a new diagnostic method only based on laboratory findings was performed by Nugent et al (1991), which has the advantage of being more objective and rapid. It is also easy to be used in any laboratory or even in a doctor's room. In this study, we evaluated 74 Gram stained vaginal smears and compared both Amsel et al (1983) and Nugent et al (1991) methods. Bacterial Vaginosis was diagnosed in 28% by Amsel et al (1983) criteria and in 31% by the Nugent et al (1991) criteria. The latter method seems to have a higher efficacy in diagnosing Bacterial Vaginosis, although both techniques together diagnose a higher number of cases.
