Euthanasia and assisted suicide.

The topic of euthanasia/assisted suicide in the United States is emotionally charged. due to grassroots efforts, patient-initiated lawsuits, and attempts to punish those participating in physician-assisted suicide, the issue has been brought into the public eye and will not disappear. Nurses are challenged to consider this debate objectively in order to support public policy that leads to sensitive and appropriate patient care. This policy analysis examines how the issues of assisted suicide and euthanasia are being dealt with both nationally and internationally, and considers various policy options.

Establishing a nurse-managed health center: interacting with regulatory, professional, and fiscal environments.

In establishing a nurse-managed health center, one must be cognizant of legal and regulatory issues that could impact on the practice. The ability to negotiate outside services, such as laboratory and medical consultation, is important. Additionally, as an integral component of financial viability, attainment of third-party reimbursement should be considered.

Negotiation of HIV preventive behaviors in divorced and separated women reentering the sexual arena.

The purpose of this study was to understand divorced and separated women's experience of negotiating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preventive behaviors when resuming sexual activity following long-term monogamous relationships. A little-studied but large group, these women are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, have low rates of protective behaviors, and have not been targeted for prevention education. Seven women entering a sexual milieu altered by the presence of HIV after at least a 10-year period of monogamy comprised the sample. A descriptive phenomenologic methodology incorporating Colaizzi's method for data analysis revealed four themes: (a) keeping the magic, (b) Am I an adolescent or an adult? (c) holding on to self, and (d) gender perspectives. These women's words help to illuminate their issues regarding HIV prevention, guiding further nursing research and HIV preventive educational interventions.

Assessing successful entry into nurse practitioner practice: a literature review.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) have been the subjects of many studies focused on role performance, cost effectiveness, and acceptance in clinical practice. As part of a study to compare successful entry of NP program graduates from various backgrounds into NP practice, a review of the literature was performed. This literature review focuses on research studies that examine successful entry into NP practice by seasoned registered nurses as well as by non-nurse college graduates who have no prior nursing experience. The topical areas that emerged from the literature were educational background and experience as a registered nurse, socialization into practice, transition into NP practice, and evaluation measures of successful NP practice. The results of the literature review revealed the need for further work on assessment of successful entry into NP practice.
