Hereditary bilateral retinoblastoma, pinealoma and normal chromosomes. A case report.

We report a boy with bilateral, familial retinoblastoma recognized at the age of 3 months. At the age of 2 1/2 years the patient developed a tumour in the pineal region. Both tumours were successfully treated by radiation. The chromosomes were normal when examined by the prophase technique, in particular there was no deletion of band q14 of chromosome 13. We consider the simultaneous occurrence of retinoblastoma and pinealoma as more then a pure coincidence, probably a consequence of a generally increased susceptibility to cancer and of the histogenetic similarities of retina and pineal body.

Computed tomography and hypocycloid tomography in lesions of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx.

In 31 patients with lesions mainly arising from the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx comparative evaluation of the results of CT and hypocycloid tomography indicated that CT generally gave a better representation of both the bony structures and the soft parts and alone has the capacity to evaluate intracranial extension. CT should first be performed in the transverse axial plane. If abnormalities in relation to horizontal bony structures are demonstrated, the examination should be supplemented by CT in the coronal plane or, if CT scanning in this plane is not possible, by conventional tomography. Enhancement after intravenous injection of contrast medium does not as a rule seem to add information of diagnostic importance.

Obstructive hydrocephalus following Pantopaque myelography.

A case with delayed development of obstructive hydrocephalus most probably caused by Pantopaque myelography is reported. At autopsy it was found that the foramina of Magendi and Luschka were occluded by granulation tissue in which the most common findings were multinucleated giant cells containing calcareous and unstained vacuoles, frequently surrounding empty hollows, many lymphocytes and plasma cells. As compared with two other similar cases and several animal investigations this shows that the reaction of the tissue is typical of a Pantopaque reaction.
