Renormalization-group transformations on quantum states.

We construct a general renormalization-group transformation on quantum states, independent of any Hamiltonian dynamics of the system. We illustrate this procedure for translational invariant matrix product states in one dimension and show that product, Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and domain wall states are special cases of an emerging classification of the fixed points of this coarse-graining transformation.

Entanglement in quantum critical phenomena.

Entanglement, one of the most intriguing features of quantum theory and a main resource in quantum information science, is expected to play a crucial role also in the study of quantum phase transitions, where it is responsible for the appearance of long-range correlations. We investigate, through a microscopic calculation, the scaling properties of entanglement in spin chain systems, both near and at a quantum critical point. Our results establish a precise connection between concepts of quantum information, condensed matter physics, and quantum field theory, by showing that the behavior of critical entanglement in spin systems is analogous to that of entropy in conformal field theories. We explore some of the implications of this connection.

Activities of pork muscle proteases in model cured meat systems.

The effect of curing agents (salt, nitrate, ascorbic acid and glucose) and processing parameters (pH, water activity and drying and cooking temperatures) on pork muscle cathepsins B, D, H and L as well as leucyl, arginyl and tyrosyl hydrolysing activities is reported. Salt (60 g/l) showed a powerful inhibitory effect, especially on cathepsin D and aminopeptidase activities where less than 13% of the original activity was recovered. Cathepsin H was also affected (38% of the original activity) while cathepsins B and B+L recovered 72.5 and 63.0%, respectively. Nitrate (0.2-0.25 g/l) and ascorbic acid (0.2-0.4 g/l) did not significantly affect the enzyme activities. On the other hand, 0.5-2 g/l of glucose activated both cathepsins B and D with an increase of 39.5 and 28.5% and also leucyl and arginyl hydrolysing activities which were 75.0 and 24.0%, respectively. No aminopeptidase activity was detected when assayed in 100 mM sodium citrate buffer, pH 5.1. Cathepsin H was also very affected at that pH and only 12.0% of activity was recovered. A decrease in water activity, especially below 0.84, also affected the enzyme activities which were found below 50%. Temperatures in the usual range of the drying process (22 and 30 degrees C) gave substantial enzyme activities (around 40-50 and 80%, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Activity of cathepsin D as affected by chemical and physical dry-curing parameters.

The effect of curing agents (nitrate, glucose, ascorbic acid and chloride) and physical parameters (temperature, water activity and pressure) on porcine muscle cathepsin D has been studied. Chloride (in the assayed range 0 to 75 g Cl-/L) showed a strong inhibitory effect. Nitrate (in the assayed range 0 to 800 mg/L) and high concentrations of ascorbic acid (4 to 8 g/L) slightly inhibited cathepsin D. However, its activity increased when glucose was added up to 4 g/L. Cathepsin D activity was maximal when incubated at 33 to 53 degrees C, was affected by a decrease in water activity and unaffected by pressure.

Is anti-alphafetoprotein immunoscintigraphy a promising approach for the diagnosis of hepatoma? Implications of a quantitative study in 41 patients.

The actual interest of immunoscintigraphy for the detection of liver tumours was investigated by both visual examination and quantitative analysis in 41 patients with hepatoma (HCC, 21 cases, 13 AFP-secreting), other primary or secondary liver cancer (9 cases), testicular cancer (2 cases) and cancer free cirrhosis (9 cases). All patients were injected with 123I-anti-alphafetoprotein (AFP) monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and scans were performed after 28 +/- 2 h. In the hepatoma-bearing patients, 11 positive anti AFP scans were found; 9 of them had an enhanced serum; besides, 3 non HCC tumours were also detected. With respect to hepatoma diagnosis, sensitivity was 52.5% and specificity 66.5%. For all hepatomas, it was striking that the positivity rate was 2/10 and 9/11, respectively, when HCC was and was not associated with cirrhosis. Among 6 patients with a positive anti AFP scan who were also injected with control anti hCG 123I-MAb, 5 positive anti hCG scans were surprisingly found, with specificity indices ranging between 1.00 and 1.75. The quantitative study also highlighted the importance for hepatoma detection of specific and non specific factors such as serum AFP, tumoural vascularization, non tumoural liver uptake and intrahepatic distribution of HCC. Anti AFP immunoscintigraphy appears as a poorly sensitive and moderately specific method for hepatoma diagnosis. In contrast, non tumoural liver uptake level could be more useful for discriminating HCC from liver metastases and perhaps to detect the early extension of HCC.

Concerning the relative non-toxicity of silacrown ionophores.

Silacrowns, ionophoric materials in which an ethylene bridge of a normal crown ether has been replaced by a R2Si group, facilitate ion transport across liquid membranes. A major aspect of their properties is their nontoxicity when compared to these crown ethers. This is probably due to their ready hydrolysis to the corresponding polyethylene glycols. The glycols also exhibit ion transport properties, even with an efficiency close to the silacrowns but the silacrowns stay intact long enough to partition into the hydrophobic phase of a liquid membrane whereas their hydrolysis products preferentially partition into the aqueous phases. Ready removal from the hydrophobic phase of a membrane will reduce the long term transporting effectiveness of the glycols. Thus, in vivo hydrolysis of the silacrowns will result in the loss of transmembrane carriers. Similar removal will not occur for normal crown ionophores which are both hydrolytically stable and partition into the hydrophobic phase, and remain there for long time periods.

A multicentric comparison of transabdominal versus totally extraperitoneal laparoscopic hernia repair using PARIETEX meshes.

The authors report a series of 1972 inguinal hernias treated between 1993 and 1997 by the insertion of a PARIETEX mesh via either a transabdominal-preperitoneal (TAPP) (1,290 procedures) or a totally extraperitoneal TEP approach (682 procedures). Pain scores were equivalent in both groups, while the hospital stay and time to return to normal activity was lower in the TEP group than in the TAPP group (p<0.001). In both groups, the average incidence of the total reported events (complications) was around 10% with no statistical difference. This ratio seemed to compare favorably to previously published reports. Chronic pain was extremely rare (0.6% and 0.7% in the TAPP and TEP groups, respectively). Whatever the approach was, sepsis was also very rare (1/1,526 laparoscopic procedures). These findings illustrate the local tolerance of the mesh. Recurrence rates were below 1% with no statistical difference between groups. This retrospective study demonstrates the clinically apparent local tolerance of this type of mesh. Prospective and long-term clinical results will be necessary to demonstrate that the optimized short-term tolerance of PARIETEX mesh will influence the long term functional results.

Streptococcus-related acute glomerulonephritis.

Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is likely the result of immune complex mechanisms. The current theories in search of the streptococcal antigen responsible for the initiation of the disease are reviewed. The finding of an extracellular protein unique to streptococci isolated from patients with APSGN and its possible role in the pathogenesis of this disease is presented.
