[Mental disorders in children with congenital meningomyelocele].

The paper is concerned with mental disorders in 82 patients aged 3 to 14 years with a cerebrospinal hernia located primarily in the lumbosacral part of the spine. The majority of children and adolescents with relatively preserved mental development (trained in accordance with the routine school program) manifested borderline disorders that correlated in 90% of cases with the symptoms of compensated hydrocephalus and psychogenic (reactive) formations-- astheno-depressive conditions, reactions and others due to the feeling of physical deficiency (motor insufficiency and disorders of pelvic functions).

[Bilirubin encephalopathy].

The author describes symptoms typical for children with bilirubin encephalopathy (the hyperkinetic patterns of infantile cerebral paralysis, audition deficiency, mental deficiency). During follow up studies (from 1 month or 1-5 years and up to 10-25 years) of children with bilirubin encephalopathy uncomplicated by prolonged asphyxia and derangement of cerebral circulation, the majority of them demonstrated the evolutional time-course of changes in motor disorders (from rigidity to athetosis and then to ataxia). Variants of neurosensory hypoacusis and peculiarities of secondary retardation of the mental development determined by audition and speech distress in children trained at the boarding++ schools are described. Preventive and treatment measures for these abnormalities are provided.

[Role of personality reactions in the pathology of character formation in infantile cerebral palsy (clinico-psychological study)].

In a clinico-dynamic and experimental-psychological study (using methods of examining interpersonal relations and frustration tolerance), the authors investigated 40 children and adolescent suffering from infantile cerebral paralysis responsible for a psychogenic pathological formation of the personality of the deficient type. Inhibitory and excitable variants of the latter are identified. Differential therapeutic-pedagogical and psychotherapeutic measures for the above group of patients are offered.

[Functional asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres in infantile cerebral palsy (according to dichotic listening data)].

Examination of functional asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres by dichotic auscultation in 83 patients (aged 12-19 years) with infantile cerebral paralysis and 228 normal subjects showed left-side dominance in 76% (right ear coefficient REC = +22.01) of patients with spastic diplegia (n = 45) and in 76% (REC = +26.0) of normal subjects; in cases of left-side hemispheres (n = 13) this parameter was 100% (REC = +35.5) and in right-side hemiparetic form 60% (REC = +22.8). The findings confirm a genetic nature of functional asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres and indicate a high degree of cerebral hemisphere dominance.

[Personality formation in younger school age children afflicted with cerebral paralysis].

Attempts were made to study the pathogenetical significance of the feeling of inferiority and the psychogenic syndrome, appearing in early school children (60 cases) with cerebral paralysis. Psychogenic reactions, appearing on an organically changed ground are formed in 2 directions: some children are characterized by neurotic reactions in combination with passive-defensive (astheno-phobic, astheno-depressive, etc.); other children react by agressive-defensive forms of behaviour (pathopersonality reactions--opposition, etc.).

[The structure of the intellectual defect in children with cerebral palsy born prematurely].

The paper is concerned with a study of the structure of an intellectual defect in 2 groups of children with intrauteral birth trauma is characterized by a certain dissociation (in a satisfactory speech development and verbal thinking there was an insufficiency of spacial perception). The structure of an intellectual defect in children of the 2nd group (characterized by a bilirubin encephalopathy due to a physiological icterus of the prematurely born) the main feature was a defect of hearing and an underdevelopment of verbal thinking, while as the subject-visual thinking was preserved.
