All-optical noninvasive control of unstable steady states in a semiconductor laser.

All-optical noninvasive control of a multisection semiconductor laser by means of time-delayed feedback from an external Fabry-Perot cavity is realized experimentally. A theoretical analysis, in both a generic model as well as a device-specific simulation, points out the role of the optical phase. Using phase-dependent feedback we demonstrate stabilization of the continuous-wave laser output and noninvasive suppression of intensity pulsations.

Stabilization of unstable rigid rotation of spiral waves in excitable media.

Depending on the parameters of two-dimensional excitable or oscillatory media rigidly rotating or meandering spiral waves are observed. The transition from rigid rotation to meandering motion occurs via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. To stabilize rigid rotation in a parameter range beyond the Hopf bifurcation, we propose and successfully apply a proportional control algorithm as well as time delay autosynchronization. Both control methods are noninvasive. This allows for determination of the parameters of unstable rigid rotation of spiral waves either for a model or an experimental system. Using the Oregonator model for the light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction as a representative example we show that quite naturally some latency time appears in the control loop, and propose an efficient method to overcome its destabilizing influence.

Delayed feedback control of noise-induced patterns in excitable media.

We show that characteristic features of noise-induced spatiotemporal patterns in excitable media can be effectively controlled by applying delayed feedback. Actually, by variation of the time delay and of the strength of the feedback one can deliberately change both spatial and temporal coherence, as well as adjust the characteristic time scales.

Noise-induced front motion: signature of a global bifurcation.

We show that front motion can be induced by noise in a spatially extended excitable system with a global constraint. Our model system is a semiconductor superlattice exhibiting complex dynamics of electron accumulation and depletion fronts. The presence of noise induces a global change in the dynamics of the system forcing stationary fronts to move through the entire device. We demonstrate the effect of coherence resonance in our model; i.e., there is an optimal level of noise at which the regularity of front motion is enhanced. Physical insight is provided by relating the space-time dynamics of the fronts with a phase-space analysis.

Delayed feedback control of stochastic spatiotemporal dynamics in a resonant tunneling diode.

The influence of time-delayed feedback upon the spatiotemporal current density patterns is investigated in a model of a semiconductor nanostructure, namely a double-barrier resonant tunneling diode. The parameters are chosen below the Hopf bifurcation, where the only stable state of the system is a spatially inhomogeneous "filamentary" steady state. The addition of weak Gaussian white noise to the system gives rise to spatially inhomogeneous self-sustained temporal oscillations that can be quite coherent. We show that applying a time-delayed feedback can either increase or decrease the regularity of the noise-induced dynamics in this spatially extended system. Using linear stability analysis, we can explain these effects, depending on the length of the delay interval. Furthermore, we study the influence of this additional control term upon the deterministic behavior of the system, which can change significantly depending on the choice of parameters.

Control of unstable steady states by time-delayed feedback methods.

We show that time-delayed feedback methods, which have successfully been used to control unstable periodic orbits, provide a tool to stabilize unstable steady states. We present an analytical investigation of the feedback scheme using the Lambert function and discuss effects of both a low-pass filter included in the control loop and nonzero latency times associated with the generation and injection of the feedback signal.

Delayed feedback control of chaos: bifurcation analysis.

We study the effect of time delayed feedback control in the form proposed by Pyragas on deterministic chaos in the Rössler system. We reveal the general bifurcation diagram in the parameter plane of time delay tau and feedback strength K which allows one to explain the phenomena that have been discovered in some previous works. We show that the bifurcation diagram has essentially a multileaf structure that constitutes multistability: the larger the tau, the larger the number of attractors that can coexist in the phase space. Feedback induces a large variety of regimes nonexistent in the original system, among them tori and chaotic attractors born from them. Finally, we estimate how the parameters of delayed feedback influence the periods of limit cycles in the system.

Noise-induced pattern formation in a semiconductor nanostructure.

We investigate the influence of noise upon the dynamics of the current density distribution in a model of a semiconductor nanostructure, namely, a double barrier resonant tunneling diode. We fix the parameters of the device below the Hopf bifurcation, where the only stable state of the system is a spatially inhomogeneous "filamentary" steady state. We show that the addition of weak Gaussian white noise to the system gives rise to spatially inhomogeneous oscillations that can be quite coherent. As the noise intensity grows, the oscillations tend to become more and more spatially homogeneous, while simultaneously the temporal correlation of the oscillations decreases. Thus, while on one hand noise destroys temporal coherence, on the other hand it enhances the spatial coherence of the current density pattern.

Quantitative results concerning effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on mesoscopic brain activity.

Phase transitions in the behavior of neuron populations depending on electromagnetic input as in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation ("rTMS") are calculated, based on mesoscopic evolution equations, which are generated from stochastic single neuron models capturing a variety of inputs. Wherever synchronization of firing in neuron populations is measurable, the above model-based quantitative predictions of effects of rTMS on brain activity can, for the first time, be tested experimentally.

Delayed feedback as a means of control of noise-induced motion.

Time-delayed feedback is exploited for controlling noise-induced motion in coherence resonance oscillators. Namely, under the proper choice of time delay, one can either increase or decrease the regularity of motion. It is shown that in an excitable system, delayed feedback can stabilize the frequency of oscillations against variation of noise strength. Also, for fixed noise intensity, the phenomenon of entrainment of the basic oscillation period by the delayed feedback occurs. This allows one to steer the time scales of noise-induced motion by changing the time delay.

Self-stabilization of high-frequency oscillations in semiconductor superlattices by time-delay autosynchronization.

We present a scheme to stabilize high-frequency domain oscillations in semiconductor superlattices by a time-delayed feedback loop. Applying concepts from chaos control theory we propose to control the spatiotemporal dynamics of fronts of accumulation and depletion layers which are generated at the emitter and may collide and annihilate during their transit, and thereby suppress chaos. The proposed method only requires the feedback of internal global electrical variables, viz., current and voltage, which makes the practical implementation very easy.

Time-delay autosynchronization of the spatiotemporal dynamics in resonant tunneling diodes.

The double barrier resonant tunneling diode exhibits complex spatiotemporal patterns including low-dimensional chaos when operated in an active external circuit. We demonstrate how autosynchronization by time-delayed feedback control can be used to select and stabilize specific current density patterns in a noninvasive way. We compare the efficiency of different control schemes involving feedback in either local spatial or global degrees of freedom. The numerically obtained Floquet exponents are explained by analytical results from linear stability analysis.

Hybrid model for chaotic front dynamics: from semiconductors to water tanks.

We present a general method for studying front propagation in nonlinear systems with a global constraint in the language of hybrid tank models. The method is illustrated in the case of semiconductor superlattices, where the dynamics of the electron accumulation and depletion fronts shows complex spatiotemporal patterns, including chaos. We show that this behavior may be elegantly explained by a tank model, for which analytical results on the emergence of chaos are available. In particular, for the case of three tanks the bifurcation scenario is characterized by a modified version of the one-dimensional iterated tent map.

Comparison of time-delayed feedback schemes for spatiotemporal control of chaos in a reaction-diffusion system with global coupling.

Time-delayed feedback control for stabilizing time periodic spatial patterns is investigated in a generic reaction-diffusion system with global coupling. We focus on the case of low-dimensional chaos where unstable patterns admit only a single unstable mode. Spatial degrees of freedom are taken into account to define different control schemes. The efficiency of these schemes is discussed, where control forces are motivated by physical requirements as well as by the possibility of obtaining analytically exact results. We find that control schemes that contain the full feedback of the inhibitor variable may finally destroy the control performance. Thus schemes that omit the inhibitor might be more efficient. Our numerical findings are explained in terms of Floquet spectra and compared with analytical solutions of particular coupling schemes.

Self-assembled quantum dots: crossover from kinetically controlled to thermodynamically limited growth.

By means of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the self-organized growth of quantum dots in strained semiconductor systems we resolve the seemingly contradictory features of kinetic versus thermodynamic behavior, e.g., with respect to the temperature dependence of the average dot size and their dispersion. We show that the size distribution immediately after deposition is kinetically controlled, with smaller islands for lower temperatures and larger islands for higher temperatures. For longer simulation times the kinetics leads to equilibration, and a crossover effect between the size distributions occurs, which is in good agreement with the predictions of thermodynamics.

Breathing current domains in globally coupled electrochemical systems: a comparison with a semiconductor model.

Spatio-temporal bifurcations and complex dynamics in globally coupled intrinsically bistable electrochemical systems with an S-shaped current-voltage characteristic under galvanostatic control are studied theoretically on a one-dimensional domain. The results are compared with the dynamics and the bifurcation scenarios occurring in a closely related model which describes pattern formation in semiconductors. Under galvanostatic control both systems are unstable with respect to the formation of stationary large amplitude current domains. The current domains as well as the homogeneous steady state exhibit oscillatory instabilities for slow dynamics of the potential drop across the double layer, or across the semiconductor device, respectively. The interplay of the different instabilities leads to complex spatio-temporal behavior. We find breathing current domains and chaotic spatio-temporal dynamics in the electrochemical system. Comparing these findings with the results obtained earlier for the semiconductor system, we outline bifurcation scenarios leading to complex dynamics in globally coupled bistable systems with subcritical spatial bifurcations.

Spatiotemporal dynamics near a supercritical Turing-Hopf bifurcation in a two-dimensional reaction-diffusion system.

Pattern formation in semiconductor heterostructures is studied on the basis of a spatially two-dimensional model of reaction-diffusion type. In particular, we investigate the neighborhood of a codimension-two Turing-Hopf instability by analytical methods. Amplitude equations are derived which predict the absence of mixed modes but extended ranges of bistability between homogeneous oscillatory states and hexagonal Turing patterns. Our results are confirmed by numerical simulations. The features are not confined to a neighborhood of the bifurcation point so that the conclusions of the weakly nonlinear analysis explain the observations in large portions of the parameter space at least qualitatively
