Dynamic geometry of the left ventricle in hypertrophy studied by quantitative angiocardiography.

An automated videoangiocardiographic system has been developed and used for the study of dynamic internal left ventricular geometry, in 53 patients (12 normals, 20 patients with different degrees of left ventricular [LV] pressure-, and 8 with LV volume overload. 9 patients had different types of cardiomyopathy and 4 atypical or failing LV). From the measurements of ejection phase parameters of contraction, the degree of endsystolic and enddiastolic excentricity of the LV, the ejection fraction, and the circumferential fiber shortening or shortening velocities it has been shown that there are no signs of impaired left ventricular function in mild and moderate left ventricular hypertrophy due to pressure or volume overload.

Adolescent

[Problem of early registration of hypertension: combination of x-ray and blood-pressure determination].

In a program aiming at 30,000 blood pressure measurements per year 12,401 persons have been examined in the canton of Berne (population of approx. 1 million) from first of January 1976 to the end of April 1977. This group belongs to the active working part of the inhabitants (age 30 years and more). The introduction of this method was without any problems. 97 to 100 percent of the people participated on a voluntary base. A short personal history of hypertension and smoking habits were requested by a questionnaire. Some results obtained by the use of a general computerprogram are presented: 15.1 % of the screened population had a hypertension greater than or equal to 160/95 mmHg. 55.5 % were unknown to the examined persons. Connections with other findings than hypertension, such as pathologic images of the heart in the x-ray and smoking have been determined. 66.5 % showed one, two or three of the above mentioned findings. The advantages of this method are stressed.

Adult

Postnatal development of the circadian rhythm of rat liver tyrosine aminotransferase activity.

The rhythm of tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) activity in 2-day old rats is characterized by a maximum at the beginning and a further one at the end of light-time. In 7-day old animals, the rhythm is much less pronounced than in 2-day old pups. At the 21st day of life, the rats already exhibit the rhythmic pattern of the adults, although the absolute values are still somewhat below those of the adults. The TAT rhythm in neonates is obviously generated by periodic variations in cyclic AMP-dependent release of TAT from polysomes.
