[Scanning electron microscopic study of hyalin joint cartilage].

Guinea pigs (pirbright white) were subjected to fixed mechanical stress in an endless-belt experiment. Shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee joints were taken and the articular cartilage was prepared for examination with the scanning electron microscope. Ultrastructural findings of cartilage surfaces were described, using different techniques for preparation and fixation. Mechanically stressed animals showed defects in their superficial 'chondrosynovial membrane' with visible fibre networks.

[Muscular changes caused by suction drainage. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, light microscopy and morphometric studies of dorsal muscles of the rat (Rattus rattus) using drainage].

Changes in the dorsal muscles of 22 rats (Wistar), resulting from surgical drain, have been studied under different morphological aspects. The lumen of drains were obstructed after a short time. In the drains without using low pressure, erythrocytes and fibrin network were seen by scanning microscopical investigation. Patent muscle fibres could be analyzed in the lumen of drain using negative pressure. They prevent the functional drain system. By the effect of surgical drains the fibres of dorsal muscles had become swollen. This fact could be analyzed by morphometrical technique. Some changes in fibres have been demonstrated by histological methods.

[Scanning electron microscopic examinations of the inner surfaces of central vessel catheters used in neonatology].

Inner surfaces of PVC central vessel catheters used in the treatment of mature and premature newborns for periods between 6 h and 12 days were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Fibrin in form of plain facets, polypous, lamellar of fibrillar-reticular agglomerations were seen at the surfaces of all examined catheters. Red blood cells and platelets attached to the fibrin or interspersed into the fibrin network were discovered. One catheter was completely occluded and a dense mycelium of candida albicans was found within the network. Fibrin depositions at the surfaces of central vessel catheters can probably be the cause of numerous complications e.g. embolic events and catheter-induced infections.

The mechanism of cytolysis of erythrocytes by the mushroom toxin phallolysin. Morphological and biochemical evidence for sodium influx and swelling.

Phallolysin, a basic protein of multiple molecular forms, was isolated from the mushroom Amanita phalloides. The toxic protein causes cytolysis in most mammalian cells at concentrations as low as 10(-8) M. Different from the cytolytic activities of detergents or sea-anemone toxin, cytolysis by low concentrations of phallolysin occurs only after a lag time of 2 to 3 minutes. In erythrocytes it was shown that phallolysin causes a rapid influx of sodium ions accompanied by a loss of potassium ions. Simultaneously, the cells swell up to their critical volume until they burst. In morphological studies the disruption of red blood cells following phallolysin treatment was found to be indistinguishable from that caused by incubation in hypotonic medium. Freeze-etching studies of phallolysin-treated erythrocytes showed changes in the membrane structure and a decrease of intramembranous particles. It is suggested that phallolysin either forms or opens preformed cation channels in the plasma membrane resulting in cation leakage. Concomitantly with the ion fluxes, water penetrates and causes the cells to swell until lysis occurs.

Fine structure of the canine prostatic complex.

The canine prostatic complex, including the prostatic urethra, the urethral openings of the prostatic gland ducts, the prostate gland proper and the ejaculatory ducts has been studied with the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The urethral epithelium was found to be a modified transitional epithelium; it extended a short distance from the urethra into the orifices of the ducts where it gradually lost height. The columnar cells were replaced by cuboidal superficial cells in the terminal ducts of the gland. With increasing distance from the urethral openings of the ducts, the superficial cuboidal cells developed secretory activity and finally were indistinguishable from regular prostatic secretory cells. The latter formed typical prostatic acini, consisting of secretory cells which were merocrine in nature, and flat lentilate basal cells. In addition to exocrine cells, three different types of presumptive endocrine cells occurred, predominantly in the periurethral ducts of the prostate gland. It has been concluded from this study that, firstly, fluid absorption and spermatophagy are the main functions of the epithelia of the ejaculatory ducts and the ampulla of the vas deferens. Secondly, it has been concluded that the different functions of the various structures of the prostatic complex can be related to their different embryological origins.

The anatomy of the heart in the sonogram. A comparison between anatomic and ultrasonic cross-section.

Cardiac sonography has only recently been introduced as a diagnostic procedure. In order to facilitate the interpretation and evaluation of the ultrasonic cardiac cross-section displayed by this two-dimensional technique, we performed anatomic cross-sections corresponding to ultrasonic cross-sections. The ultrasonic cross-sectional images were taken from children with a real-time-motion scanner. The anatomic cross-sections were taken from adult hearts. Two ultrasonic transverse cross-sections are compared with the two corresponding anatomic cross-sections and three ultrasonic longitudinal cross-sections with one corresponding anatomic cross-section. The direct comparison between anatomic and ultrasonic cross-sections best promotes the understanding of the latter: such a comparison shows certain gaps of information in the ultrasonic display, mostly due to the physical prerequisites of the technique. Morphological details, therefore, should be interpreted with great care. In spite of these disadvantages, sonography is the only non-invasive method that provides an exact analysis of the heart's structure. In addition to this, the real-time-motion technique allows observation of the movements of cardiac structures.

[On the venous system in the retroperitoneal region (a contribution to the persistence of the primitive vena cava system) (author's transl)].

A vasal anomaly in the region of the Vena cava inferior is being described in the corpse of a 25-year-old man. 1. In the course of development the V. subcardinalis has not been joined to the Pars hepatica of the V. cava inferior, which originates from the V. hepatis revehens communis. In our case the Anastomosis intersubcardinalis remains and is subjected to a slight retroaortal displacement to the left. 2. Among the Vv. sacrocardinales the V. sacrocardinalis sinistra, which ought to involute after the sixth embryonal week, has been retained together with the Anastomosis intersacrocardinalis. 3. The Vv. supracardinales are connected with the intersubcardinal anastomosis and the intersupracardinal transversal anastomosis has been retained. 4. The Vv. caudales end in the Anastomosis sacrocardinalis at a point before the Sacrum and the Anastomosis intercaudalis has been retained, too. 5. The caudal section of the right lower cardinal vein in its prerenal part is retained with an anastomosis to the right subcardinal vein. 6. The portal blood of the liver is directly distributed to the atrium dextrum after it has passed through three Vv. hepaticae. The Lig. venosum is intrahepatic and is joined to the Vv. hepaticae. 7. The primitive bilateral-symmetric veinous system of the caudal half of the body continues to exist almost completely.

[Sports and the spine].

The flexibility of the vertebral column in 160 male athlets and 105 female athlets has been measured. The instrument used by us was the Hydrogoniometer (Rippstein) which has been put exactly on the determined points of the back of all probands. Having moved the vertebral column in all directions the measurements have been registered and statistically analysed with standard measurements. We find a lot of differences in the different movments of the vertebral column regions between the athlets and the non-athlets. These persons with untrained vertebral columns are partly more flexibel then the probands with active trained vertebral columns.
