[Hemorrhagic shock and encephalopathy].

Levin et al. described a new syndrome called haemorrhagic shock and encephalopathy in 1983. The authors present a case report and give an overview about the disease. They summarize the informations published recently.

Demonstration of Clostridium septicum infection in a goose flock.

Clostridium septicum infection causing 5.0 to 5.2% mortality is reported for the first time in the literature from six-week-old growing geese in three flocks comprising 5,200, 5,500 and 5,900 geese, respectively. The affected birds exhibited weakness, uncoordinated movement, ataxia and, frequently, oblique position of the head and neck (torticollis) as well as signs indicative of dysequilibrium. The affected birds died within 18-24 h. Gross pathological examination revealed anaemia, hepatitis with map-like necroses of irregular outline (Fig. 1), acute enteritis, pulmonary oedema and cardiac dilatation. Light and electron-microscopic examination showed that the sinusoids of the liver were markedly dilated (Fig. 2) and filled with serous exudate and gas (Figs 2 and 3), and the hepatocytes surrounding them exhibited severe oedema (Fig. 4). Among the hepatocytes, ciliated bacteria 7-10 mu in length and 1-3 mu in width, bounded by a well-defined cell wall and often showing signs of spore formation were observed (Figs 5 and 6). By bacteriological examination the pathogen was isolated, its properties were studied, and the clinical entity of malignant oedema was experimentally reproduced by intramuscular injection of guinea-pigs and rabbits. The applied antibiotic (oxytetracycline) and furazolidone therapy proved effective.

[The origin of hyperprolactinemia associated with infertility and its treatment with Bromocriptin-Richter tablets].

Authors used the tablet Bromocriptine in 22 cases for the treatment of infertility and in 15 cases for that of extra-puerperal galactorrhoea. The serum-prolactin level of the patients of the two groups remained in 16 cases below and in 13 cases beyond of the upper value of the normal menstrual cycle. It turned out, that the average prolactin-level of patients, treated against infertility, diminished significantly even after one month after the treatment. Between the values of serum FSH, before and after LH treatment there have not been found any significant difference. On the contrary, in the values of serum progesterone and 17-beta-oestradiol significant differences have been observed after treatments of one month as well as of two months duration. On the basis of the results, authors can state, that the prevailing progesterone-level is the adequate indicator of potential fertility. During the treatment of hyperprolactinaemic pathologies eight pregnancies occurred (21.6%). It turned out, that hyperprolactinaemia was the real cause of procured abortion. For the registration of latent hyperprolactinaemia the Cerucal (metoclopramide) load proved to be an adequate diagnostical method.

The glucose-induced insulin release after adrenalectomy in the rat.

Plasma glucose and insulin levels following glucose loading were investigated in adrenalectomized rats. Both oral and intravenous administration of glucose induced an elevation in plasma glucose and insulin level. The increases of plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher in the adrenalectomized rats compared with the controls. We conclude, that corticoid hormones are capable of inhibiting glucose-induced insulin release in the rat.

Adrenalectomy

Lack of inhibitory effect of verapamil on glucose-induced insulin release in the rat.

The effect of the calcium-antagonist Verapamil was investigated on the blood glucose and insulin release in rats. Verapamil induced a significant elevation of the blood glucose and increased the insulin release too, however, it was not able to inhibit the glucose-induced insulin release. The authors suggest, that the effect of glucose is not restricted for the calcium turnover of the islets of the pancreas, and may be there are other cellular mechanisms apart from the effect on the calcium movements by which glucose induces insulin release.
