[Morphofunctional characteristics of malignant thyroid gland tumors in children from various regions of the Ukraine, who have been victims of of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident].

Thyroid cancers in children from the affected areas of Ukraine were investigated by means of light (33 cases) and electron (20 cases) microscopy. Statistical data from 25 regions of Ukraine have been analyzed concerning thyroid cancer in patients aged up to 18 years for the period 1981-1990. There is an increase in the number of thyroid cancers in the children of Ukraine from 0.04-0.06 cases in the "pre-chernobyl" period to 0.23 cases per 10(5) children's population in 1990. In the children operated in the Clinic of the Institute of Endocrinology in 1990-1991, severe forms of thyroid lesions with metastases to the lymph nodes were noted. Histopathological studies show prevalence of different variants of papillary cancer with presence of follicular, solid, poorly differentiated areas. Ultrastructural analysis revealed polymorphism of tumour cells, various degrees of their differentiation and functional specialization that point to a mixed multicomponent nature of carcinomas.

[Pathogenesis of arterial hypertension in diabetes mellitus].

To investigate pathogenesis of arterial hypertension in diabetes mellitus, the authors measured parameters of central and peripheral hemodynamics, basal renin levels, angiotensin, aldosterone, kallikrein-kinin system. The results were analysed with regard to hypertension type: essential (EH), atherosclerotic (AH) and nephrogenic (NH). Hypokinetic circulation, defected vascular elasticity, activation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and hypoactivity of kallikrein-kinin system were characteristic of EH and AH. Most pronounced changes in peripheral hemodynamics and hypoactivity of depressor kallikrein-kinin system were seen in NH.

[The effect of microwave resonance therapy on the clinical and metabolic indices of diabetic patients].

It has been established during studies carried out in 195 diabetes mellitus patients that the action of microwave resonance therapy on the points used in traditional acupuncture accelerates carbohydrate metabolism compensation, improves peripheral circulation. The beneficial effect of microwave resonance therapy on the clinical and metabolic characteristics in diabetes mellitus patients is likely to be determined by the lowering of the content of certain contrainsular hormones (cortisol, adrenaline) and by the improvement of the parameters of the T-cell immunity system.

[Contents of gonadotropic and sex hormones in the blood of healthy children].

The blood content of follicle-stimulating, luteinizing hormones, prolactin, testosterone and estradiol was measured in 343 normal children (181 boys and 162 girls) aged 1 month to 16 years by radioimmunoassay with the aid of standard commercial kits. Standardized age- and sex-associated indicators have been elaborated. The time-course of changes in the hormonal content during puberty has been characterized.

[A comparative evaluation of radionuclide and ultrasonic studies of the thyroid].

Unlike radionuclide scanning (RNS) ultrasound investigation (USI) permits thyroid volume estimation in hyperplasia and euthyroid goiter. USI in nodular goiter gives an opportunity to reveal the sizes of a tumor, its macrostructure, topographic position with regard to the neck organs and vessels and is a method of choice in autoimmune thyroiditis. A considerable advantage of USI is a possibility to characterize the thyroid collateral lobe in toxic adenoma and to perform investigations over time. A positive feature of RNS is a possibility for differential diagnosis of "hot" and "cold" nodes of the thyroid, metastases to other organs and atypical localization of the gland.
