[Clinical and epidemiologic evaluation of carcinogenic pollution in the wood-processing industry].

Hygienic, clinical, epidemiologic studies in primary woodworking and chipboard production workers showed that exposure to occupational hazards (wooden dust, formaldehyde and other chemicals of wooden origin) results in frequent allergy and irritation of upper respiratory tract and skin. High oncologic risk among woodworking production employees assigns the industry to a group with oncologic jeopardy. MAC for wooden dust should be corrected taking into account the chemicals (phenol, formaldehyde, furans et al.) content.

[Epidemiology of chronic, precancerous and oncologic diseases in workers of asbestos and cement industry].

Hygienic, clinical and epidemiologic screening was performed in staff of asbestos and cement goods production enterprise. Various dystrophic processes of pharynx and nasal cavity appeared to prevail among upper respiratory tract diseases. Average exposure to dust during 22 years at the stated production can lead to asbestosis 0-I stage, average exposure during 20.5 years can result in dust bronchitis and occupational allergic dermatosis can result from average exposure to dust during 21 years. Retrospective cohort study of mortality within 1949-1988 failed to find oncologic risk in workers engaged into asbestos and cement goods production higher than in general population.

[The results and outlook of a clinico-epidemiological study of the problem of the carcinogenic hazard in industry].

Much attention is paid to clinical and epidemiological aspects of carcinogenic hazards in the production of asbestos textile, asbestos cement, friction, graphite and furniture goods. "Dose-response" relationship in exposure to occupational carcinogens was studied, criteria of occupational malignant neoplasma appurtenance were worked out, role of carcinogenic factors in malignant tumors of rare localisations was shown, signs of carcinogenic aerosols effects described and prophylactic measures suggested.

Carcinogens↗

[Biodemographic parameters as indicators of genetic adaptation to harmful occupational factors (e.g. asbestos)].

A total of 129 women working at asbestos-concentrating factories and asbestos articles manufacture plant, including 87 of them facing asbestosis and 42 exposed to asbestos without asbestosis were examined. There was no marked shifts in the reproductive function and pregnancy results of women facing asbestosis and those exposed to asbestos without asbestosis. Women facing asbestosis has infant mortality higher than other women. Parameters of potential selection (index Crow) in the studied population showed an unfavourable demographic situation in women facing asbestosis. Analysis of biodemographic data helped to suggest the possibility of genetic predisposition to asbestosis.

[Chronic background and pretumorous diseases of the respiratory organs in manufacturing contingents in contact with industrial carcinogens].

The authors have carried out hygienic, clinical and epidemiological studies among workers engaged in graphite and asbestos industries. Occupational diseases--carboconioses and dust bronchitis that occur in workers engaged in graphite industry may be attributed to the preceding diseases conducive to the development of lung carcinoma. Among patients with asbestosis, the risk for lung carcinoma is 2 times higher than in workers exposed to asbestos-containing dust, who do not suffer from asbestosis. The latter condition can also be regarded as a preceding illness that contributes to the development of lung carcinoma in workers engaged in asbestos industry. To enhance the efficacy of preventing cancer diseases of the respiratory organs, it is suggested that examinations for oncological diseases be included into the screening programs for workers exposed to carcinogenic agents.

Asbestosis↗

[Endoscopic and morphological characteristics of the bronchi and lungs in asbestosis and dust-induced bronchitis in asbestos-textile industry workers].

A bronchofibroscopy study of cases with histologic investigation of the bronchi and pulmonary mucous biopsy of 29 asbestos-textile workers, revealed diffuse bilateral endo-bronchitis (DBE) with concomitant tracheitis at different stages. No correlation was found between the endoscopy pictures and the clinical manifestations of asbestosis and dust bronchitis. The asbestosis diseased patients displayed pulmonary fibrosis++ without granulomatous inflammation in the asbestos dusts zone. In some cases, bronchial epithelium diffuse metaplasia was diagnosed with some dysplasia elements, as well as papillomatosis and malignant tumours in the lungs. Dust bronchitis++ and asbestosis can perform precancerous conditions in the lungs, what should be taken into account in cancer prevention measures for asbestos industry workers.

[Etiology of lung cancer in workers of graphite industry].

Carcinogenic hazards for workers of certain plants of steel, asbestos, oil-producing, oil-refining and chemical industries were studied. Potential carcinogenic hazards for workers of graphite industry conditioned mainly by coke and graphite dust adsorbed polycyclic hydrocarbons, particularly, benzo(a)pyrene made the case for cancer epidemiologic studies which were carried out at some of those plants in the 70s. Exposure to polycyclic hydrocarbons adsorbed on industrial dust was shown to significantly increase the incidence of lung cancer.

Benzopyrenes↗

[Basic principles of mass screening of patients with asbestosis].

Complex hygienic, clinical and epidemiologic studies were carried out at 2 enterprises producing asbestos-technical products. It was established that the workers engaged in the production of such products were exposed to relatively low levels of asbestos-containing dust. The course, complications and outcome of asbestos-associated fibrosis were studied in 110 patients. The study revealed that asbestosis was characterized by its slowly progressing development. Asbestosis complications included lung tuberculosis, chronic intersticial pneumonia, and lung cancer. Proceesing from the epidemiologic survey higher risk of malignant neoplasms of the lungs was established in patients with asbestosis in comparison with those exposed to asbestos-associated fibrosis were studied in 110 patients. The study revealed that asbestosis was characterized by its slowly progressing development. Asbestosis complications included lung tuberculosis, chronic intersticial pneumonia, and lung cancer. Processing from the epidemiologic survey higher risk of malignant neoplasms of the lungs was established in patients with asbestosis in comparison with those exposed to asbestos-containing dust but having no occupational disease. The study findings were used for the substantiation of dispensarization principles for patients with asbestosis. The number of follow-up, laboratory and other examinations along with basic curative and preventive measures were pointed out.

[Evaluation of the carcinogenic hazard in the manufacture of graphite articles].

As a result of complex hygienic, clinical and cancer epidemiologic studies, dust proved to be a major occupational hazard. Coke and graphite dust absorbs polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including benz(a)pyrene in concentrations exceeding maximum permitted levels. Screening of 746 graphite workers followed by clinical examination established increased incidence of diseases of the upper respiratory tract (chronic rhinitis pharyngitis, laryngitis, etc.), bronchi and lungs (chronic bronchitis or pneumonia) and skin (hyperkeratosis, naevi, etc.). Among respiratory diseases were hypertrophic laryngitis, papillomatous bronchitis and angiofibroma of the larynx which are now considered to be precancer. Cancer epidemiologic studies referred graphite workers to a group of high risk of cancer.
