[Expression of urokinase plasminogen activator, its receptor and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 in different types of atherosclerotic lesion in human aorta].

The role of plasminogen activators in the regulation of key processes of atherosclerosis progression stays unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), its receptor (uPAR) and the plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) in human aorta, and to balance them with the stage of atherosclerotic lesion. We have shown that uPA and uPAR in normal aorta are mostly expressed by intimal smooth muscle cells. The expression of these proteins was up-regulated in diseased aorta compared to normal artery. The most part of cells in both fatty streak and fibro-fatty lesion were monocytes/macrophages, and about 60% of these cells expressed uPA and its receptor. PAI-1 was mostly localized on the lumonal part of the aorta and in the extracellular matrix of the intima. We observed a moderate increase of PAI-1 expression in atherosclerotic lesion. Thus, our data indicate participation of plasminogen system in atherogenesis.

[Colostomies in gunshot wounds of the large intestine].

The frequency and indications to colostoma formation are shown that were performed during the recent military conflicts in 40-70% of the wounded with large intestinal injuries. The authors state the indications to colostoma formation in the injuries of extra- and intra-abdominal parts of rectum and colon as well as the conditions when colostoma could be avoided. Different methods of colostoma formation and technical details are presented. In field surgery it is reasonable to apply the more simple methods. The operation defects, colostoma complications, measures of their prevention and treatment are discussed in details. The authors distinguish the complications developed in the early postoperative periods and colostoma diseases having independent significance and which become manifestative in 2-3 months after operation.

[Infusion-transfusion therapy of acute blood loss during early surgeries in children with severe thermal trauma].

Research results of the central hemodynamics, microcirculation and of oxygen status are described for 48 children (aged 8 months to 14 years) as observed during surgeries aggravated by massive hemorrhage in the routine infusion-transfusion therapy plus a 6% solution of INFUKOL GEK. Solution dosages of 6% were approved; the drug's positive effect on the central-hemodynamics condition, microcirculation and on the oxygen regime, as observed in the process of the infusion therapy made to compensate for a massive blood loss, was demonstrated; besides, the related shrinking of the infusion therapy total volume and the possibility to give up totally or to significantly reduce the blood-drug preparations, administered intraoperatively, were shown.

[Children's health status under ambient air pollution].

The present study was undertaken to comparatively assess the health status of organized preschool children living under varying man-made pollution. Pilot and control districts differing in the level of man-made ambient air pollution were identified. The morbidity and physical development of children in these areas were studied. Fewer healthy children and more ailing children, more children with dysfunctions of organs and systems, and more sick children, as well as more physically retarded children were detected in the higher man-made loaded district of an industrial town.

[Disorders of lipid content of blood in diabetes mellitus].

The authors present the results of prospective study of the blood serum lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, lipoproteid fractions) in 132 patients with diabetes mellitus aged from 35 to 60 years and in 47 healthy persons of the same age (control group). The majority of the patients examined (60.6%) showed hyperlipidemia; types II and IV were most frequent. An increase in the content of the probeta-lipoproteid fraction and hypertriglyceridemia were mostly encountered in patients with macroangiopathies, particularly in the presence of adiposity. There was revealed no significant relationship between the frequency of hyperlipidemia and the severity of diabetes mellitus. However, the most distinct lipid disturbances were found in the patients with the disease of moderate severity. This was apparently connected with the prevalence in this group of persons with an excessive weight. As revealed, the incidence of hyperlipidemia rose on account of increased level of both total cholesterol and of triglycerides (with a tendency to their greater content in women).

[The use of fat and protein metabolic indices in assessing the compensation status of diabetics].

The examination of 448 patients with diabetes mellitus has shown that the use of indices of cholesterol, nonesterified fatty acids, ketone bodies, residual nitrogen, urea and creatinine using range normal limits permits the assessment in combination with clinical findings of the state of compensation. Change in the state of fat and protein metabolism was shown to be related, to a great extent, with a type of diabetes rather than with a patient's age.

[Intracellular hormonal function of acetylcholine and noradrenaline: the regulation of the catalase level in liver cells].

The injection of acetylcholine (15 to 150 micrograms/100 g) to rats or preincubation in the hepatic homogenate with acetylcholine (10(-6) to 10(-3) M) induces a decrease in the catalase activity, mainly in its bound form. Acetylcholine effect does not manifest in the presence of actinomycine D and puromycine. Noradrenaline injection to animals (1.5 to 15 micrograms/100 g) or preincubation of the hepatic homogenate with noradrenaline (10(-6) to 10(-3) M) produces a rise of the catalase activity (mainly of its bound form), being blocked by actinomycine D and non-blocked by propranolol. Acetylcholine- and noradrenaline action on the catalase level is not mediated by cyclic nucleotides and may be considered as intracellular hormonal effect.
