[Criteria for the social and vocational prognosis in pronounced mental retardation].

Overall 370 mentally retarded persons (aged 15 to 35 years) staying at the specialized institutions of the RSFSR Ministry of Social Welfare were examined. The degree of the intellectual defect, concomitant psychopathological disorders, correlations between the degree of the intellectual defect and the ability for mastering labour and social skills, the conditions of living and training of the patients were accepted as criteria for social and labour prediction. Statistically significant differences were established in the values of integrative mark estimations of patients with pronounced debility, of those with mild, medium and profound imbecility. Significant correlations were revealed between the degree of mental retardation, on the one hand, and the level of mastering labour skills and social experience, on the other one. In the patients with pronounced debility, the psychopathlike syndrome was among concomitant psychopathological disorders producing a significant effect on social and labour prognosis. The relationship was established between the magnitude of the integrative assessment of the degree of the intellectual defect and realization of potential capacities of mentally retarded persons.

[Complex stimulation of the locomotor and psycholingual develop- ment of children with perinatal lesions of the central nervous system].

In 121 children with perinatal CNS damage a combined therapy was performed including, besides routine drug treatment, imitation stimulation of age-matched posture-++-tonic attitudes and motor skills, metameric reflexotherapy aimed at the CNS region lesioned, magnetotherapy, electric laser puncture targeted at correction of dysfunctioning brain structures. Treatment efficiency was controlled by the brain "development profile" derived from formalized neurological and neuropsychological investigations, and electroneuromyography. The efficiency of the therapy was considerably decreased by the 3rd semester of life.

[Imbecility of moderate degree in schoolchildren].

The data of an experimental psychological investigation and self-service skills acquisition are presented for children with slight imbecility in three age groups: junior, middle and senior school-age. The peculiarities of the course of mental functions are discussed and potential intellectual capacities assessed in terms of the social and labor rehabilitation.

[Comparative-age aspect of severe imbecility].

The study covered 3 age groups of patients with marked imbecility: 9-12, 13-15, and 16-18 years of age. The study was conducted with the help of psychological experiments as well as clinical and pedagogical observation. The patients' household skills and abilities to provide self-care were also analyzed. The results obtained are indicative of the positive development of individual functions which, however, is possible only under conditions of constant stimulation and corresponding work. Nevertheless, potential abilities of the patients are poor and they should be brought together in groups in boarding houses to allow them to learn at a level compatible with their intellectual abilities.

[Clinical features of one of the syndromes associated with oligophrenia--the so-called "elf face"].

The authors give a clinical description of 19 patients from 2 years and 10 months-18 years with "elf face" syndrome. The most prominent traits of the disease were a specific look of the face, congenital heart insufficiency, muscular hypotonia, inguinal hernia. The mental state was characterized by an expressed mental retardation with some special traits: relatively well developed speech, talkativeness, good-naturedness, an euphoric mood, inactivity and poor motor functioning. In 3 patients who were older a psychopath-like syndrome was found. A study of the kariotype in 5 cases depicted hetermorphism of homologues in some pairs of chromosomes in more than 10% of the cells as well as an increased amount of structural reconstructions. Indirect calculation have shown that the incidence of the syndrome is approximately equal to 1:25000 births which is significantly more than cited in literature.
