Occurrence of 2- and 3-hydroxy fatty acids in high concentrations in the extractable and bound lipids of Flavobacterium meningosepticum and Flavobacterium IIb.

The major hydroxy fatty acids of cellular lipids in Flavobacterium meningosepticum and Flavobacterium sp. King's group UUb were identified as 2-hydroxy 13-methyltetradecanoic, 3-hydroxy 13-methyltetradecanoic, 3-hydroxy palmitic, and 3-hydroxy 15-methylhexadecanoic acids using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and GC-mass fragmentography. The concentration of these hydroxy fatty acids comprised up to 30-40% of the total extractable and 20-30% of the bound lipid fatty acids, respectively. From the stability for mild alkaline hydrolysis, 2-hydroxy fatty acids seemed to be attached with ester linkage, and 3-hydroxy fatty acids with amide linkage.

Serological typing of 31 achromogenic and 40 melanogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

Thirty-one achromogenic and 40 melanogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were studied with 10 monovalent typing sera (3). Twenty-one of the achromogenic (67.7%) and seven of the melanogenic (17.5%) strains were agglutinated by one of the 10 typing sera. Ten achromogenic and 33 melanogenic strains were not agglutinated by any of the 10 typing sera. As far as this set of antisera is concerned, the typability of achromogenic and melanogenic P. aeruginosa strains appears to be much lower than that of the chromogenic, nonmelanogenic strains of the species reported previously.

Legitimacy of the names of subspecies of Campylobacter fetus proposed by Véron and Chatelain, 1980.

Since the publication of the 8th edition of Bergey's Manual of determinative bacteriology, there has been considerable confusion concerning the names of 2 subspecies and the types of the subspecies of Campylobacter fetus (Smith and Taylor, 1919) Sebald and Véron, 1980. Despite the documentation of the names C. fetus subsp. fetus (Smith and Taylor) Véron and Chatelain and C. fetus subsp. venerealis (Florent) Véron and Chatelain, which appear in the "Approved lists of bacterial names", the influence of Smibert's description in the 8th edition of Bergey's Manual continues. To stabilize the nomenclature and to avoid or reject the use of names which may cause error or confusion, this paper will focus on the legitimacy of the 2 subspecific names of C. fetus proposed by Véron and Chatelain.

Molecular characterization of a conjugative R-lac plasmid in Salmonella typhi isolated from a patient with typhoid fever.

In a strain of Salmonella typhi isolated from a patient with post-operative typhoid fever, a 217-Kb conjugative plasmid has been detected which codes for lactose fermentation and drug resistance to sulphonamides (SA), chloramphenicol (CP), ampicillin (AP), kanamycin (KM) and trimethoprim (TP). The physical and genetic map was constructed. The lac region containing the lacI gene, the regulatory region and the lacZ and lacY genes was shown to be structurally identical to that of Escherichia coli K12. A transposon carrying genes for resistance to CP and AP, as well as four copies of IS1-like elements, were detected and localized on the plasmid. Their role in the emergence of such a large plasmid is discussed.
