[structure: see text] New macrocyclic chelates based on bis-pyrazolylpyridine and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid are synthesized, and the remarkable luminescence properties of their lanthanide chelates are reported.
The development of an immunoassay for screening contamination by chlorophenols is presented. Two haptens were synthesized and conjugated to immunizing proteins to raise rabbit polyclonal antibodies. The antibody-coated format (direct) gave better sensitivity than the conjugate-coated format (indirect) if 2,4,6-trichlorophenol is used as target analyte. The measurement range was 86.4 microg l(-1) to 0.7 microg l(-1), with an average I50 of 7.8 microg l(-1) and a detection limit of 0.2 microg l(-1). The assay detects the presence of trichloropyridinol and other chlorophenols such as di-, tetra- and pentachlorophenols constituting thus a suitable tool for the early warning of the presence of such family contaminants. The optimized method permits the detection of the most important chlorophenols in a fast and reproducible way using no more than one antibody and a single assay. The results achieved with water samples spiked with different chlorophenols fit with a multiple linear regression model when expressing the total concentration of chlorophenols as equivalent of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (P < 0.01), demonstrating the usefulness of the assay as a screening tool to detect contamination by chlorophenols.
The title complexes displayed a marked dependence of their luminescence properties upon pyridine substitution. The ligand with the 4-carbamoyl-substituted pyridine showed a long-lived luminescence of near-unity quantum yield for Tb3- and quite reasonable values for Eu3+, Sm3+ and Dy3-, thus making it an excellent candidate for a luminescent probe to be attached to biomolecules by a peptide-like linkage.
Confinement may efficiently condition the stereochemical outcome of a reaction through space constriction and molecular close contact. This article briefly reviews recent approaches of supramolecular chemistry to achieve chiral confinement. Crystallization is not always possible and the use of chiral crystals or clathrates lacks generality. The construction of solid supramolecular assemblies circumvents some of the problems of the crystal chemistry. In this regard, molecular imprinting of polymeric matrices with orifices mimicking the transition state of an enantioselective process is a very young, promising technique. Zeolites provide porous, rigid environments to host molecules without the need of lucky crystallizations, yet zeolites are not chiral per se and must be chirally modified. Besides, the limited dimension of their pores restricts the size of the guest molecules. Despite these problems, useful asymmetric photochemical reactions have been performed on zeolites. Finally, the formation of pillared lamellar structures, from inorganic salts of tetravalent transition metals covalently grafted with organic chains, is considered. The adequate selection of functionality and chirality of the organic pillars would afford custom-made, highly porous, 3D hybrid organo-inorganic scaffolds. However, the production of asymmetric processes within these layered materials still remains to be seen.
