Classifying novel phases of spinor atoms.

We consider many-body states of bosonic spinor atoms which, at the mean-field level, can be characterized by a single-particle wave function for the Bose-Einstein condensation and Mott insulating states. We describe and apply a classification scheme that makes explicit the spin symmetries of such states and enables one to naturally analyze their collective modes and topological excitations. Quite generally, the method allows classification of a spin F system as a polyhedron with 2F vertices. We apply the method to the many-body states of bosons with spins two and three. For spin-two atoms we find the ferromagnetic state, a continuum of nematic states, and a state having the symmetry of the point group of the regular tetrahedron. For spin-three atoms we obtain similar ferromagnetic and nematic phases as well as states having symmetries of various types of polyhedra with six vertices.

Quantum fluids of self-assembled chains of polar molecules.

We study polar molecules in a stack of strongly confined pancake traps. When dipole moments point perpendicular to the planes of the traps and are sufficiently strong, the system is stable against collapse but attractive interaction between molecules in different layers leads to the formation of dipolar chains, analogously to the chaining phenomenon in classical rheological electro- and magnetofluids. We analyze properties of the resulting quantum liquid of dipolar chains and show that only the longest chains undergo Bose-Einstein condensation with a strongly reduced condensation temperature. We discuss several experimental methods for studying chains of polar molecules.

Quantum magnetism with multicomponent dipolar molecules in an optical lattice.

We consider bosonic dipolar molecules in an optical lattice prepared in a mixture of different rotational states. The 1/R(3) interaction between molecules for this system is produced by exchanging a quantum of angular momentum between two molecules. We show that the Mott states of such systems have a large variety of quantum phases characterized by dipolar orderings including a state with an ordering wave vector that can be changed by tilting the lattice. As the Mott insulating phase is melted, we also describe several exotic superfluid phases that will occur.

Vortex-Peierls states in optical lattices.

We show that vortices, induced in cold atom superfluids in optical lattices, may order in a novel vortex-Peierls ground state. In such a state vortices do not form a simple lattice but arrange themselves in clusters, within which the vortices are partially delocalized, tunneling between classically degenerate configurations. We demonstrate that this exotic quantum many-body state is selected by an order-from-disorder mechanism for a special combination of the vortex filling and lattice geometry that has a macroscopic number of classically degenerate ground states.

Interference between independent fluctuating condensates.

We consider a problem of interference between two independent condensates that lack true long-range order. We show that their interference pattern contains information about correlation functions within each condensate. As an example, we analyze the interference between a pair of one-dimensional interacting Bose liquids. We find universal scaling of the average fringe contrast with system size and temperature that depends only on the Luttinger parameter. Moreover, the full distribution of the fringe contrast, which is also equivalent to the full counting statistics of the interfering atoms, changes with interaction strength and lends information on high-order correlation functions. We also demonstrate that the interference between two-dimensional condensates at finite temperature can be used as a direct probe of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Finally, we discuss the generalization of our results to describe the interference of a periodic array of independent fluctuating condensates.

Spin-wave contribution to the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in triplet superconductors.

We discuss collective spin-wave excitations in triplet superconductors with an easy axis anisotropy for the order parameter. Using a microscopic model for interacting electrons, we estimate the frequency of such excitations in Bechgaard salts and ruthenate superconductors to be 1 and 20 GHz, respectively. We introduce an effective bosonic model to describe spin-wave excitations and calculate their contribution to the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We find that, in the experimentally relevant regime of temperatures, this mechanism leads to the power law scaling of 1/T1 with temperature. For two- and three-dimensional systems, the scaling exponents are 3 and 5, respectively. We discuss experimental manifestations of the spin-wave mechanism of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation.

Coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate charge-density wave in the 2H transition metal dichalcogenides.

An unexpected feature common to 2H transition metal dichalcogenides ( 2H TMDs) is revealed with a first-principles Wannier function analysis of the electronic structure of the prototype 2H TaSe2: The low-energy Ta "5d(z2)" bands governing the physics of a charge-density wave (CDW) is dominated by hopping between next-nearest neighbors. With this motivation we develop a minimal effective model for the CDW formation, in which the unusual form of the hopping leads to an approximate decoupling of the three sublattices. In the CDW phase one sublattice remains undistorted, leaving the bands associated with it ungapped everywhere in the Fermi surface, resolving the long-standing puzzle of the coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate CDW in the 2H TMDs.

Fractional quantum Hall states of atoms in optical lattices.

We describe a method to create fractional quantum Hall states of atoms confined in optical lattices. We show that the dynamics of the atoms in the lattice is analogous to the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field if an oscillating quadrupole potential is applied together with a periodic modulation of the tunneling between lattice sites. In a suitable parameter regime the ground state in the lattice is of the fractional quantum Hall type, and we show how these states can be reached by melting a Mott-insulator state in a superlattice potential. Finally, we discuss techniques to observe these strongly correlated states.

SO(4) theory of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Bechgaard salts.

Motivated by recent experiments with Bechgaard salts, we investigate the competition between antiferromagnetism and triplet superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional electron systems. We unify the two orders in an SO(4) symmetric framework, demonstrating the existence of such symmetry in one-dimensional Luttinger liquids. SO(4) symmetry strongly constrains the phase diagram, leading to coexistence regions of antiferromagnetic, superconducting, and normal phases, as observed in (TMTSF)(2)PF(6). We predict a sharp neutron scattering resonance in superconducting samples.

Luttinger liquid of polarons in one-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures.

We use the bosonization approach to investigate quantum phases of boson-fermion mixtures (BFM) of atoms confined to one dimension by an anisotropic optical lattice. For a BFM with a single species of fermions we find a charge-density wave phase, a fermion pairing phase, and a phase separation regime. We also obtain the rich phase diagram of a BFM with two species of fermions. We demonstrate that these phase diagrams can be understood in terms of polarons, i.e., atoms "dressed" by screening clouds of the other atom species. Techniques to detect the resulting quantum phases are discussed.

Magnetization plateaus for spin-one bosons in optical lattices: Stern-Gerlach experiments with strongly correlated atoms.

We consider insulating states of spin-one bosons in optical lattices in the presence of a weak magnetic field. For the states with more than one atom per lattice site we find a series of quantum phase transitions between states with fixed magnetization and a canted nematic phase. In the presence of a global confining potential, this unusual phase diagram leads to several novel phenomena, including the formation of magnetization plateaus. We discuss how these effects can be observed using spatially resolved spin polarization measurements.

Disordered Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi-one-dimensional magnetic microtraps.

We analyze the effects of a random magnetic potential in a microfabricated waveguide for ultracold atoms. We find that the shape and position fluctuations of a current carrying wire induce a strong Gaussian correlated random potential with a length scale set by the atom-wire separation. The theory is used to explain quantitatively the observed fragmentation of the Bose-Einstein condensates in atomic waveguides. Furthermore, we show that nonlinear dynamics can be used to provide important insights into the nature of the strongly fragmented condensates. We argue that a quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the insulating Bose glass phase may be reached and detected under the realistic experimental conditions.

Spinor bosonic atoms in optical lattices: symmetry breaking and fractionalization.

We study superfluid and Mott insulator phases of cold spin-1 Bose atoms with antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice, including a usual polar condensate phase, a condensate of singlet pairs, a crystal spin nematic phase, and a spin singlet crystal phase. We suggest a possibility of exotic fractionalized phases of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and discuss them in the language of Z2 lattice gauge theory.
